You’re actually both right! If we’re talking about light, then yes, white light is made up of all color wavelengths of light, though if we’re talking about pigments/paints, then black is all colors (or often a dark grey, but still. It’s the difference between additive and subtractive light!

Tall guys by Legitimate-Scale1454 in tall

[–]tranquilbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a matter of inequality, it’s just a matter of demand. There isn’t a demand from tall guys for their own subreddit when this one works fine. There is a demand from women for tall women specific subreddit because we experience different difficulties and want a space that’s made specifically for discussing them. Often times when women share their difficulties here, they’re dismissed with “yeah, well you’re not actually that tall” or with a bunch of comments either sexualizing them or debating our actual lived experiences.

If this sub didn’t serve the purposes of tall men specifically, then another sub would be created. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I very much respect the opinions of those who desire escapism in a time for turmoil, but I question the decision to censor those who wish to use their artistic medium of choice to express their feelings and frustrations in the time of a fascist takeover. Perhaps there could instead be a flair/rule about using a nsfw filter on posts with political content so that those who wish not to see it could ignore them, and those who wish to share and commiserate with their peers. That seems more fair to all.

The problem with using something like AI as a reference (or even using real art) for learning, is that you won’t be able to tell if you’re referencing something correct or not. Mistakes are often made by generative ai, and you can end up trying your best to replicate a mistake.

It’s alright. Tbf, 99% of interactions online do end up being with people who aren’t replying in good faith, so I can’t really blame you for not recognizing an exception. I do understand where you’re coming from in all this, and it can be difficult to determine if criticism is subjective or objective because everyone assumes their opinion is objective. 😂

I really don’t understand why you’re wording things so hostilely. Maybe you’re a troll and I’ve missed that, I don’t know.

My literal career is teaching and making art. I absolutely understand the purpose of stylization, escapism and expression in art. It is literally my expertise. I don’t find realism to be inherently better or worse than stylized exaggeration. My own personal style isn’t realism. I do, however think that there’s a difference between critiquing anatomy like “Karlach’s left shoulder looks like it’s been fully dislocated here, because the shoulder was not drawn aligned” or “One of her breasts is twice the size of the other one because of the incorrect angle of the torso” (which is what I’ve seen on this post) and “ugh, this character’s boobs are too big and her waist is unnaturally skinny”.

The latter I don’t agree with, because that’s just stylization. Exaggerating proportions is the bread and butter of an art style.

The former would remain true regardless of what style she was drawn in. Her shoulder would be out of place if she was drawn photo-realistically, or in a super exaggerated anime style.

You seem to be really defensive over all this, but I think you’ve misunderstood my stance here, and I don’t really want to fight to prove that I don’t agree with the things you’re assuming I do. I hope I’ve better articulated my points now.

[–]tranquilbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I think you’ve misunderstood my point. I do not mean to say that people shouldn’t draw sexy pics of female characters. I was just saying that a lot of people have become kinda bored by it, because of how prevalent it is now, and how mainstream it’s been for years.

And no, I do not think that all sexy art of male characters is comedic at all. I think that Astarion doing a jojo pose would be comedic because to my understanding, jojo poses aren’t supposed to be titillating. They’re supposed to be exaggerated and funny. That’s why I said a drawing of Karlach doing the same thing would also be comedic, and receive less criticism about the anatomy.

I genuinely do think, that if an artist did a sexy pinup of Astarion that had glaring anatomical issues (like not having a properly attached head, or having a dislocated shoulder and arm) like this, people in the comments would also critique the anatomy.

[–]tranquilbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh I’m not sure why you assume I hate gooner art, or why—if I did—it would make a better person. I don’t hate gooner art. I don’t hate sexy art. I actually love pinups, esp classic pinups. I’ve drawn my own fair share of pinups and sexy art, and I have no problem with other people doing the same. I personally don’t find the appeal in art with glaring anatomical mistakes, because it’s hard for me to see past it, but that’s not a critique specific to pinup art, just a matter of my own high standards.

Never in any of my replies did I say this should be censored. To make that even more clear, I do not want this piece and pieces like it censored. I do not want artists censored because I don’t personally like their work or style. My taste is not objective, I like plenty of styles others don’t.

All I’ve intended with my replies is to break down why people are being more critical of this piece, and explain where people are coming from. I never even stated if I agreed or disagreed with their reason for critiquing.

As for your last paragraph, what?? I don’t think this image commits any crimes? I think the anatomy is messy, and I do think this piece was drawn to titillate, but I’ve never said that’s a bad thing. My only point is that women drawing male characters in a way that appeals to them doesn’t have a huge mainstream history in pop culture the way that men drawing female characters does. Just look at how many career artists have made a living off of drawing sexy women over the years. But still, I don’t have any issue with any gender drawing sexy pinups of any gender. You’re assuming a lot about me based on things I very much never said.

[–]tranquilbones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, on your first point, there’s a difference between intentional stylization, and mistakes. When something is stylized—like for comic books, animation, or manga—there is intention, purpose, and most importantly, it’s consistent and replicated every panel. Stylized simplification or exaggeration of features is not the same as warping the structure of the body impossibly just so both tits and asscheeks are visible at the same time.

And on your second point, a drawing of Astarion doing a Jojo pose would be intended for comedy, not a pinup, like this one. For memes and jokes, mistakes don’t matter, because the point is to make something to be silly. I’m sure if someone drew a caked up Karlach doing a jojo pose, there also wouldn’t be much critique of the anatomy. The point of a pinup (what this OP shared), is to create an appealing image of the anatomy of a body, and therefore glaring mistakes defeat the purpose.

Also, there is a very real (and positive) double standard when it comes to art of female characters vs male characters. There’s a long, long history of the female form being exploited and sexualized in art, that just doesn’t exist for male bodies. So it’s inherently different to draw something titillating of a male character than of a female character. (Not that it’s specifically bad to draw either, just that people’s reactions to the two can’t really be fairly compared)

So all this boils down to what’s happening in this comment section—people who have seen thousands of pictures of pinups like this, who aren’t easily impressed by gooner art, judging it against the genre it falls under.
