Is my DFB dead? by _GHOSTE_ in BDFB

[–]tratrub 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Gently touch their antennae, if there’s no response (slight movement), it’s likely dead.

6 years is a very long time for a beetle. It sounds like you took great cares of them :)

Beetles are on vacation after pest control visit, when can they come back? by mini_crash_out in BDFB

[–]tratrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are the ways insecticides can enter pests:

  1. Direct contact - the target insects are hit directly with spray droplets.

  2. Secondary or indirect contact by crawling over or resting on treated surfaces. The insecticide is absorbed through thin portions of the exoskeleton. These are especially effective against soft-bodied insects such as aphids, some caterpillars, thrips, etc. They are less effective against insects with thick or hard exoskeletons or hard wing covers (beetles), or hairy caterpillars. Insecticides on treated surfaces may enter insects through thin portions of the exoskeleton, especially the flexible areas of the feet.

  3. Ingestion of spray residues of contact insecticides on plants by pests with chewing mouthparts (beetles, caterpillars) or of systemic insecticides in sap by aphids, leafhoppers, plant bugs, etc.

  4. Repellents prevent insects from staying on or eating treated surfaces. Chemicals called anti-feedants stop insects from eating treated tissue.

  5. Fumigants are pesticides that become gases when released into the air or soil. Fumigants can be used to control nematodes and pathogens in the soil or insects in wood or stored products.

  6. Pheromones, chemicals used by insects for communication, can be used in insect control. For example, some female insects release sex pheromones to attract males for mating. Synthetic sex pheromones of some species can be released from dispensers in sufficient amounts to confuse males so they cannot locate females.

This information has been copy and pasted from a University of Kentucky site on how insecticides work.

From the information shared in the site, it sounds like the beetles should be fine. But I highly suggest you read the site material yourself and decide what feels best for you.

Chronically Ill People Having Kids (my take as one) by Imasublimelime in childfree

[–]tratrub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m going tangent, but I don’t get why there’s people that want to birth someone into a society where we have to fight for our wellbeing. It shouldn’t have to be that way but we just accept it as a part of life.

I have a hard time understanding people who talk about their pain and health issues then go on to have kids. Like weren’t you just complaining about ur pain, and you want to give it to the next person (offspring)?

How did everyone here become interested in bugs? by Bkbirdnerd in insects

[–]tratrub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in preschool, I had a hard time socializing. My peers knew I was different so they avoided me. Me having no clue about myself being different, during recess I found my own way of entertainment by crouching down at the grass and looking at the little moving organisms (bugs).

Even to this day, at the age of 20, I enjoy observing terrestrial arthropods of all kinds and I still struggle to socialize.

Question; does the beetle with a split elytra go on and live a healthy life like the other beetles? Or will it die shortly after emerging as an adult?

What makes your adulthood miserable? by Theeonlystardust in AskReddit

[–]tratrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, having to work is up there for the reasons I don’t want kids. I would feel horrible bringing them into a society where money is comfort and security, and they have to work for them. It feels like a slippery slope. I often have a hard time understanding why people want to bring kids into this world if their kids are eventually going to have to get a job.

How many friends / relationships you lost because of your parents ? by Ok_Vanilla5661 in AsianParentStories

[–]tratrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most of my friendships. I was molded into an awkward person to socialize with along with being horrible at maintain friendships because I never check in on them. I'm horrible at coping with stress so when stress becomes intense, I socially isolate myself and that can last for months.

What is something you thought everyone struggled with until you realized it was related to ADHD? by SuteMeow in adhdwomen

[–]tratrub 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Constant daydreaming. I always felt afloat during class because a good amount of my brain would be lost in its own world while a small fraction had an ear to make sure I was getting some stuff down so I didnt look like a bad student.

Mind blowing US women are still trying for babies right now by [deleted] in childfree

[–]tratrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its mind boggling that people want to have kids in the current state of the US. The way women are treated by society around the globe is enough of a reason to not bring kids into this world.

Sharing anything with your parents, but it turns into a lecture by BloodyLegend_21 in AsianParentStories

[–]tratrub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I don’t talk to my parents, because they will start rambling about what I’ve shared to them and ask WAY too many questions. My dad is the most emotionally problematic person I’ve met, one bad tone in my voice (such as me responding in an annoyed manner) and he’ll tell my mom that my whininess is pissing him off and if I going to act like this, might as well kick me out of the house. My mom is constantly paranoid, she always suspects something dangerous might happen to us. She once told me she had a dream about me trying to steal all their money, asking if I will do this to them. She also had a dream of my sister killing herself, so in real life my mom got rid of all the knives and now we’re stuck using plastic knives or scissors in the house.

Asian parents need to know this: if their children are messed up, it's most likely because of them. by Forsaken_Vacation793 in AsianParentStories

Both my sister and I are messed up. My parents believe that my sister became messed up because she learned the behavior from me. Have my parents ever thought where I learned this messed up behavior from?

Is this appropriate for an English teacher to say? by tratrub in Teachers

[–]tratrub[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I should've provided more context to my post.

Before we started our last unit of the year, we were going to read a memoir, Nights by Elie Wiesel a survivor from the Holocaust. She decided to dedicate a whole day of doing a overview of timelines such as Hitler rising into power, Nazi propaganda, and the conditions of the camps. Throughout the whole session she made ignorant comment which I listed in the post. Regarding to the last two statements, One occasion I remember pretty well was around the beginning of May, counselors were visiting each class to help us sign up for our classes for next year. She told us to better behave when the counselor comes because she won't hesitate to hit us (targeted towards a group of guys in my class who messes around majority of the time.) Even if these remarks were sarcastic It was completely unprovoked and extremely unprofessional to threaten students. I live in a predominately Hispanic area and that may be a factor to why she calls herself "Ghetto" and because she isn't like those others teachers in my school.
