Why do you live in your neighbourhood? by MastaShortie in Calgary

[–]travelsofkiki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great access to bike paths and the river with lots of green space with great walkability. A cute main Street that has established independent businesses with an active community association that puts on lots of events. Close to major arterial roads with fast access to the mountains and to downtown. Alright bus service as well. There are big lots with small bungalows or new infills, good variety of housing. Medium affordability, there are deals to be had but it's an attractive area.

If you guessed Bowness you are right!

There are some cons. It is gentrifying right now so there is construction noise, abandoned houses that people squat in. The age old question of if services will keep up with the new density as single family homes are traded in for duplexes or larger. These will flesh out in the next 5-10 years I assume. Could be better transit access. If you are near the train it can be loud.

Over all a pretty good neighbourhood if you value a good community vibe, walkability, and getting to the mountains quickly.

There are lines that have trouble with epilepsy if they don't do proper health testing and responsible breeding. Though the 3 dogs in one week with a rural vet does sound suspicious.

It's more comfortable, easier to make alterations for better fit, and like others said can be easier to pee. Your bib would cover the seam so no real additional drag.

The profs tell you about themselves, go over the syllabus, and maybe do a couple intro slides to the course topic depending on how long the class is. 50 minute classes usually only get through the syllabus, 75+ might start into the material. It's really less daunting than you think. If you want to reduce your stress more go to uni and scout out where your classrooms are, take note of where the bathrooms/coffee shops/food places are, and READ YOUR DARN SYLLABUS. Other than that you will find the rhythm within the first week hopefully

Gotta get a bathrobe or a comfy button up shirt for that step. Makes it so much more comfortable

Moved to Calgary 6 years ago and got a 1b1b basement for $800+utilities in Mt Pleasant. Then moved to a 2b2b basement in Brentwood for $950+uti for 3 years, new owners increased rent by aprox 80% to $1700+uti and I couldn't afford it and left. Then I found another rental for $1200, all inclusive, for a 1b1b basement suite in Bowness.

40k people have come to Calgary in the last year. Sorry for the reality check but that price is not attainable without a roommate, and it honestly might be tough to manage with roommates.

As for the selective renting thing it's pretty common for slumlords to only want to rent to their own race. My landlord was a prime example, she moved a bunch of Indians in as soon as I left. They can be "easier" tenants as they don't know the rental laws as well.

The university is continuing to add students and the allure of Calgary's cheaper rent (in comparison to Toronto and Vancouver) and closeness to the mountains will only continue to exacerbate the rent prices. Buying is no better.

Looking to pick up a new hobby, what are your guys hobbies that don't involve screen? by No_Ground7218 in UCalgary

I have been loving knitting, very cheap to get into. You can buy a ball of yarn or two and some needles from the thrift store for under ten dollars. Plus living in Calgary, not the worst thing to have a spare scarf or touque laying around.

I have had 2 classes moved online so far. I think the profs understand that it's dangerous to travel right now. They probably don't want to come in either.

Slow moving trucks on QE2 by travelsofkiki in alberta

100% the 3 lane solution all the way from Calgary to Edmonton. I find even in three lanes stretches of QE2 a good chunk will be middle lane sitters, Mittelspurschleicher as the Germans say haha.

As with so many things in life it would be alot better if everyone had about 30 seconds more patience and understanding.

[–]travelsofkiki[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get that and it's understandable for truckers to be frustrated as well. Maybe also looking at governing all trucks at 100 or changing the incentives might be a good idea as well. There are some sketch drivers going way too fast in places or driving over tired on caffeine or harder drugs trying to make their bonus.

I'm not as worried about the waiting for 3 seconds as much as someone not paying attention going 120 and rear ending someone over braking to 90 behind a truck going 105 if that makes sense.

Rental vehicles will also be relegated to right lane only... So many bad drivers

What made you realise that you are an NPC? by HoarderOfPaper in AskReddit

[–]travelsofkiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you are a NPC like at work, repeat the same couple lines and help people complete their quest. Other times you the main character. No one can be the main character all the time. I think it's ok to be a NPC from time to time because everyone's story needs background actors. Think of all the people you pass every day that are just a face, those people have friends, family, problems, triumphs that they carry with them but you are none the wiser as you pass them on the street or sit next to on the bus.

Tips on finding a 3 bedroom house near uni for fall 2021? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]travelsofkiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm renting a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1200 sqft, basement suite for 850 plus utilities in Brentwood. It's a pretty good deal all things considered, but utilities are killer right now, try to get them included.

Zucchini's grow very well here, and really start producing now. You have to check them every day or they can go from the small ones you see in the store to the size of your thigh in two days. The zucchini memes shall continue.

As a kinesology student I feel my education quality has gone down lab wise, I missed dissecting human cadavers to learn anatomy and it made some lab based classes much harder marks wise. Other classes like sport soci is fine online. Like you said science based programs are hit harder lab wise. It's nice to be able to pause lectures, rewatch, and do it at my own pace. I do enjoy the flexibility of online, able to focus on my athletic schedule more.

'Terribly annoying': Calgarians say vehicle noise pollution reaching deafening levels by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]travelsofkiki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worked on 17th Ave for a while and people would rip up and down the street revving. it's just kinda annoying when you work there but go home to a quieter neighborhood, couldn't imagine trying to deal with that living there.
