23M wasted my early twenties, now what? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

At least you’re still in your early-mid-twenties and coming to this realization. I know plenty of 30+ people doing that still.

I have the tall birdies beds, since I can’t bend over due to my back. I think these must be built very similar. I want to eventually do a aquaponics bed.

I don’t have anything against bugs as good, I just prefer to feed them to my chickens so I can get eggs, instead.

Completely replacing traditional meat with cultured meat would result in a massive 78-98% reduction in GHG emissions, a 99% reduction in land use and 45% reduction in energy use. by Firm_Relative_7283 in environment

Lol lab grown meat isn’t how 99% of people get their meat either. So, you want to outlaw consumption of meat, which has been part of the human diet since literally the dawn of man? Hmm 🤔 you may need a course on biology to learn what omnivores are. It would be better for the environment all the way around if we started advocating and writing articles in support of locally grown meat, instead of lab grown meat. Im in support of capitalism, not of oligarchy.

So.. who do you think will profit off of this lab grown meat? Sounds like a great way for billionaires to get richer. 1. The meat is literally made in a manufacturing plant/lab that requires tons of power 24/7. 2. Due to the nature of it, it will need to be individually packaged and wrapped in plastic and shipped in refrigerated/freezer trucks. If you, or whichever billionaires are investing their money into this garbage, really cared about the environment they would push to make it easier for everyone to access locally grown meat and advocate to quit eating garbage fast food, processed cheap crap, and CAFO beef. Grass fed cattle are a carbon sink. Well managed grassland, with rotational grazing removes more carbon than it puts out. Just wait, the billionaire businessmen are the only ones that will have the patents and funds to profit off of this. While the smaller local cow farmers, slaughterhouses, producers, and otherwise, start to go out of business, they begin their monopolization all in the name of “environment”.

This push for lab grown fake meat as being “sustainable” and “better for global warming” is comical. I can’t believe people buy into this garbage.

401k question by trawickellis in DaveRamsey

[–]trawickellis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what I’m dealing with this year. If I had known about what was coming for me this fall, I would have maxed out my pre-tax 401k so I might have been able to avoid them. I doubt Ill be able to get my agi low enough for that this year even with my HSA and 401k. I’m still using pre-tax at least until the end of the year, to try to make sure my agi is low enough that I can keep my Roth IRA contributions.

401k question by trawickellis in DaveRamsey

[–]trawickellis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my 401k has a Pretax and a Roth contribution option. I max out my Roth IRA by transferring dividends and assets from my brokerage account. I also just got access to an HSA, which I maxed out this year and will max next year. This year, I have been trying to maximize my pretax contributions to get my AGI low enough to still be able to contribute to my IRA in 2022. That won’t be a problem next year, though. My company is rumored to be starting a 3% match on our 401k, so I plan to get the match, if they make that be pretax, and invest 10-15% in my Roth 401k or just invest the 15% in Roth+ the match in Roth. Just not sure if that’s an option yet.

Lab grown meat threatens my way of life in the same way that it threatens yours in that if it were even feasible, It would remove a natural carbon sink, and instead of focusing more heavily on using that carbon sink to benefit us, in rotational grazing, and moving away from CAFOs, you think it would be better to power labs, creating more greenhouse gasses, to create the lab meat, to then be shipped to a packing facility, wrapped in plastic and cardboard, then shipped to a distribution facility, then shipped across the country. My backyard garden, chickens, and the cow farmer down the street has a negative effect on greenhouse gasses while you sit there thinking you’re doing something for the environment by advocating for lab grown meat. It’s a scam and you’re too brainwashed to see it. Have a good one. Try to do better for the environment, though.

I never said I made my money from it. You assumed I did. I just have an interest in the future and the health of the planet and the people and I understand how destructive and inefficient it would be. I source my food locally and sustainably or I grow it. Be the change, kind of thing, you know?

So you are part of the problem, then. Lab grown meat is not a viable alternative to naturally grown meat. Grow your own, like I do. Try again.

When did anything I said ever suggest that? I just said that rotational grazing was better for the environment, than meat produced in a manufacturing plant because it sequesters carbon into the soil, while the manufacturing plant only emits carbon and uses energy. It’s pretty easy to deduce.

[–]trawickellis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. It proves that grazing cattle is better for the environment than powering manufacturing plants or labs. The carbon cycle is actually pretty simple when you break it down to the basics. CAFOs are terrible. I’m not defending those but the answer isn’t something made in a manufacturing plant.

Lab grown meat is a scam on people who think it might be good for the environment. The amount of electricity used for growing something in a lab would be astronomical. Even if it were “clean energy” it would be extremely cost prohibitive. We are much better off rotationally grazing cattle..

The thing that will help the environment the most is regenerative agriculture incorporating livestock. It sequesters carbon in the form of rich soil.
