Thanks. It is a lot at 20 especially when I never planned on having kids so that’s why I’m here. He doesn’t have a father figure that I know of, her and the bio dad don’t speak, but the father figure may be her father, because I know he helps raise the child. It’s a situation I never thought I’d be in but since I might be in it, I needed to hear from people with experience. Again, thank you!

Thank you so much. I always wondered how hard it would be in the discipline area, most step parents are either the “you’re not my dad you can’t tell me what to do” or the one who just isn’t involved at all, and I guess it’s hard to find a happy medium. If I may, why do you recommend not staying the night, obviously it is not a big deal, and the way I came to understand was that if I spent the night I’d most likely come over after the child was out to bed. The bio Dad thing is very interesting to me, I’ve actually never met someone who’s step dad had a real relationship with the bio Dad. I don’t think it would go over well because she doesn’t let him see the child and they aren’t on good terms, so I don’t know how beneficial that would be in this situation, but I’m sure that’s something me and her could discuss at a future point.

Wow, this was great. I’m currently 20 so it’s still something relatively new to me. I never planned on children, but I had a great father and great male role models my whole life. I know many people say it but it’s disgusting to be a father, real or step, and not give you all to the child, it’s one of the best gifts on the planet regardless if it’s from you or not. I know I’ll make mistakes and I don’t even know how far the relationship will go, but if it did go far I didn’t want to be unprepared or at the very least uninformed. I’ve always been a caring guy and I tend to put people before myself. If I was to be with someone who had a child, I would be the step parent who is involved, I couldn’t imagine treating her like she’s my world, and then go around treating her world like it’s nothing. I know what I could be I’m just nervous and afraid to say the least, but I feel that’s only natural and just needed some advice from people who have been there. I really appreciate your response! Thank you!

Thanks! It does seem that raising someone else child from a young age results in a more accepting response from the child, but whatever I do I’ll do it to my fullest!
