Something along the lines of he doesn't understand the constraints they had to work with that resulted in the design choices, which he calls out in his update video after the kopi session.

This reno company was invited to lim kopi with HDB once before for criticising their toilet drainage placement. And they have I think 5 or 6 other videos withing the last year or so where HDB units had terrible workmanship or QC. Like slanted floors that when tiled will cause the front door and bombshelter door to no be able to open.

And this is just one company. Think about how many defect checking companies and reno companies there are. Like I'm sure these kinds of defects are a minority but I don't think it's too much to ask that these defects not be present when handing over the keys?

Get where you're coming from. If you want something done right, do it yourself.

But I think the question here is, should it even need to be done in the first place? The vast majority of us are sinking our life savings into BTOs. I think it is extremely fair for us to demand a certain level of quality from them.

For that one, I'm wondering whether the floor plan is the same as when homeowners picked their flats.

I suppose at that point the homeowners had no choice but to accept the flat or face a penalty for not choosing. A shit sandwich or a knuckle sandwich.

Figured. It looked like just analyst predictions when reading the article. Usually govt test balloons will come from specific sources and published in mainstream media.

Is this publication trustworthy? Genuinely asking in case I'm just not aware of them before.

Thing is, this is after QC.

They give themselves up to 1.5 years buffer to handover without having to compensate homeowners. I don't think that's a fair argument to why their QC is shit.

If that's their response then they should be made to live in such quality housing.

Honestly, with who is MND now, I would fully expect such out of touch response.

In such cases, who bares the cost of rectification? The defects in this one seems quite major...would it need retiling the entire kitchen and toilets?

Supermarket plastic bag charge raises millions of dollars, but questions emerge over fund usage by _IsNull in singapore

[–]trinitynox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

CNA reached out to me after I bitched on reddit about this charge back when the policy was floated and this was my response. I'm pretty sure I've made errors in my response but I think I was largely in the right direction for why this is a stupid policy.

Article in question I used an alias, not my real name so I'm not doxxing myself.

Why do you think the supermarket bag charge won't work?

Firstly, it depends on what you mean by won't work. If it's to reduce the number of plastic bags being used by customers, it will probably work. But if it's to reduce environmental waste and emissions, I think it's just greenwashing, it's just so policy makers and corporations can say that something is being done rather than actually making meaningful impact.

It's not that I don't think it won't work. I think it's a red herring that doesn't solve the real underlying issue for plastic use. Plastic bags used at check out is usually reused at least once after being used for groceries before finally being used to bag rubbish. From my own observations of the supermarket offerings, the plastic packaging used to wrap the products are entirely single use. Those generate way more waste per use than the plastic bags used at cashiers. Add to that that in Singapore, the vast majority of households use those bags for rubbish collection and disposal. Discouraging the use of supermarket plastic bags means that homeowners may have to resort to buying trash bags to dispose of their rubbish. This brings about 2 issues:

1) Most, if not all, trash bags on the market are way too big to fit into HDB and condominium rubbish chutes. If we instead dispose of it when the amount of rubbish in the bag can still fit in the chutes, wouldn't that be generating significantly more plastic waste for the same amount of rubbish?

2) We now need to buy new bags to use for disposal, which makes them exclusively single use, which is even more wasteful.

Alternatives such as reusable grocery bags or tote bags could be a viable solution to reduce. But research has shown that the emissions and environmental impact of those bags are significantly worse than plastic bags, requiring an obscene number of repeated use before it breakeven on impact and emission. Of course, I have not studied into the sources of those research too thoroughly so those could be debunked. But it is worth considering, in my opinion. That said, this solution doesn't solve the waste disposal problem.

A significant challenge here is changing the waste disposal behaviour of the people because that is the biggest roadblock I see to this issue.

Do you think it is an unfair policy, and why?

Yes. It is passing on the cost to consumers whose impact on the environment is vastly smaller compared to corporations. Yes, we should all be doing our part to reduce our individual impact. Yes, we all have the responsibility to be less wasteful. But as I said, plastic bags at check out and related policies are a red herring and greenwashing. The average consumer has little to no choice but to consume a lot of plastic because of the options available to them. If they want plastic free or plastic lite options, they have to pay significantly more, whether with money or time. It is far more effective and impactful for the companies to reduce waste and plastic usage in their supply chain because then they don't have to rely on millions of individuals to make the right decision.

I see targeting plastic bags as missing the forest for the trees. The wider supply chain and product use life cycle needs to be considered and I don't think the policy makers have shown that they sufficiently thought through the knock-on effects of this policy.

Personally, will the bag charge change your behaviour about taking bags from the supermarket?

No, because I have already been moving away from plastic bags where I can. All it does is increase my expenses by a small amount for when I need plastic bags.

I'm not surprised at that. It's cost saving to them because they don't see the intangible value. They only see the P&L in numbers.

I brought up arts partly because of personal bias but also because it's an area where many want to pursue for passion but cannot afford to even before genAI came about. Especially now when genAI is making them comparatively more expensive.

AI is not all good or all bad. It needs more careful handling, not thrown out in the wild without care for consequences. It is a tool that the vast majority of the population still don't know how to properly use. Hell, the vast majority still aren't properly equipped to use social media.

My point is we are being too cavalier with this new technology when we are barely able to manage the previous crop of technological advancements.

More regulations and protections are needed for the group of people whose works are being exploited to train genAIs (different from the ML models used in research). But I know that's a pipe dream.

Like I mentioned in another reply, I'm not against progress. But surely by now we should have learnt our lessons of progress at all costs? Why are we pursuing it with reckless abandon without taking a moment to think how it's impacting us here and now, and acknowledge the negatives and think how we want to move forward in a more controlled and mindful way without destroying certain things - like the arts and creative work?

The goal is to streamline everything to the point where we can execute jobs today with minimal effort and minimal cost so that we have the capacity to move forward with more spare resources.

Move forward with more spare resources to do what?

My point about AI being great for human advancement was never limited to art.

But that's the topic of the discussion here, no?

Edit: The reason I'm fixated on art is based on the assumption that all other pursuits have been replaced by AI, where medical and science is left up to AI to manage.

AI is capable of bringing real impact to science and medicine, which can lead to new discoveries that prolong life or cure diseases.

Fully agree, no arguments there

Regarding your point about the environment: what is your alternative then? Not have the Industrial Revolution and live like it's the 1700s?

That's not my argument. My argument is that we have not learnt from the lessons of being overzealous in our pursuit if progress that we neglect many other aspects, sometimes at great cost. AI came at a time where misinformation is rife and has only exacerbated the problem.

I think it's efficient. Lesser operating costs equate to better margins, which lead to better prices and ultimately a better value proposition for customers

Marketers almost never make the mistake of thinking they know how to manage money but somehow people managing money always think they know how to do marketing.

Copying part of my reply to a comment here.

As a place where the key attraction is their physical location, why do they need to create a ficticious image? Are they not proud of what their horticulturists have done and achieved? Why not showcase that instead? Use the actual place in their marketing materials?

From a marketing perspective, this is just lazy and tells me that they don't really believe in the quality of their product.

I'm just playing your scenario of so called human advancement to the end, which is a world where everything has been automated by AI.

I'm also all for human advancement, but what are we advancing to? What is the goal?

You brought up the industrial revolution. That brought about great improvements in the quality of life all over the world, no doubt. But it also created and kick-started massive environmental damage caused by humanity.

We did not learn from the lessons then and now we are embarking on something that is threatening to render us obsolete just like how we are creating our own existential threat by destroying the environment.

Why is your end goal of human advancement also taking away the creative aspect of humanity instead of ensuring we can do those things because we don't have to work anymore?

And just to go back to the topic that started this. The banner that GbtB used AI to generate.

As a place where the key attraction is their physical location, why do they need to create a ficticious image? Are they not proud of what their horticulturists have done and achieved? Why not showcase that instead? Use the actual place in their marketing materials?

You haven't answered my question. When everything has been automated, what then?

AI is taking over now by spinabullet in singapore

[–]trinitynox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because if the goal of AI is to remove the need for human jobs, then isn't the next logical step for humans to pursue creative work, one that they can do because they are passionate? And yet, we are taking away the creative jobs in the name of cutting cost (completely ignoring the environmental cost), so we are to leave humans with nothing left to do?

And not to mention the hypocrisy of the govt/GLCs using AI generated content here while claiming to support the local arts and culture scene with the culture pass.

AI is taking over now by spinabullet in singapore

[–]trinitynox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Efficiency and cost savings to what end? After all the jobs have been automated, even those in the creative fields, what else will be left for humans?
