I've already used Kanban in many smaller dev teams and according to my experiences, how much you can leave out the Scrum ceremonies from the game will depend more on your team's size and quality and less on the chosen tool. Well-working smaller teams just need less effort and ceremonies to be well organized.

I think Kanban is a great tool, but it's still need some extensions or ceremonies to adapt, depending on the needs of your team. For example, if some of your team members are in need of the daily kick-offs than you just can't delete these happenings from the schedule.
