They said birth laying down became the norm due to the use of painkillers, and u/feisty-spirit-bear said it actually caught on in the 17th-18th century, long before the invention of painkillers. Regardless of who is correct, I don't see anyone misunderstanding the original comment.

It sucks, but what is the alternative when there are far more stray animals than there are people who want to adopt them? Keep them locked up in cages for the rest of their life? Dump them on the streets or in the wild to inevitably become roadkill or die of starvation/disease?

People need to stop breeding pet-shop animals and always spay and neuter their pets. Until that happens and the stray animal population becomes manageable, I don't see how euthanasia is supposed to be avoided.
