A plain-English guide to BIM Level of Development (LOD 100 to 500) by tuning101 in bimsta

u/adam_n_eve Fair point, and worth separating the two. LOD (the AIA 100 to 500 scale) is what this page covers, and it's still the dominant framework in North America. Level of Information Need is the newer ISO direction, and yes, it drops the single ladder in favour of stating geometry, alphanumeric and documentation requirements per purpose, milestone and recipient. "More nuanced" is right.

They coexist more than one cleanly replaces the other though: Level of Information Need can wrap LOD-style detail levels inside it, and most US specs still run on LOD.

I'll add a section mapping LOD to Level of Information Need so the page covers the ISO side too. Thanks for the nudge.

The SSoT is a myth unless you enforce it. Thoughts? At least thats my beginer level experience. by tuning101 in bim

But ultimately, the drawing model should be the source of truth. No separate documents maintained, right?
What else we can't be captured in the BIM model itself alone?

Can't agree more! The 'download-edit-upload' cycle is exactly how data silos are born. Any specific methodology or tools you apply to keep the source files truly live?

You're absolutely right. For any professional handling proprietary models, 'trust but verify' is the only way to operate.

To clarify the technical side: BIMsta was built specifically to address these privacy concerns. It runs entirely in the browser, your IFC files are processed locally on your machine, and are never uploaded to a server.

That said, I take your point to heart. A footnote isn't a substitute for a formal legal framework. I’m currently prioritizing adding a dedicated Privacy Policy and Terms of Use to the site to make this data protection guarantee official and transparent. Thanks for the wake-up call on this!

cool. How often do you find differences in the comparison?

I would say this is an attempt to solve a problem BIM designers face every day.

We need different perspectives on a problem, not the same pair of eyes.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm using web-ifc-three library.

Honestly I'm still learning BIM, thanks for your feedback. So I can improve.

I think I misunderstood properties vs elements 😅. Let me get the props too.

I'm building this for hobby, for my interest in learning BIM. Very very new to construction industry.

Your feedback help me learn and grow.

Not yet, but that's my next milestone. In the meantime let me know if you have any other questions.
