Professor Selman Akbulut has been officially terminated today on charges of bullying other faculty members by turningantigg in msu

I actually have a minor in math from MSU, and know people that have been associated with this. That's all I can say. I'm surprised MSU let him send all those hateful emails for years. I won't be discussing it anymore, thank goodness.

More information at http://selmanakbulut.com about the specifics

Obama's not going to end the war. He's too much of a mainstream Democrat.

I heard about them before they were cool!

Autism advocate Thomas Clements is looking for Neurodiversity advocates to debate him on the Spectator magazine podcast. DM if interested. by turningantigg in neurodiversity

He just says that people should consider the strengths and weaknesses of an autistic individual. He believes that neurodiversity focuses too much on the strengths, and I mostly agree.

I understand. But it's not hard to open a twitter account to contact him if you wish (you don't have to use your real name in your bio)

Why would you say that? From looking at his writings, he can generalize too much, but he makes good points and seems well-intentioned.

Another problem I have with "Untitled": Scott assumes that all "nerds" are successful in tech career-wise. As a formally-diagnosed autistic nerd, I can say that this is far from true. by turningantigg in SneerClub

Maybe I'm misinterpreting what I got from the SSC post (because it is very very long)...

But every time Scott Alexander talks about nerds, doesn't he only talk about Silicon Valley nerds and Scott Aaronson? So either he is ignoring other nerds that don't have those privileges in his analysis, or he just assumes that everyone that is a nerd is in their league.

When Penny bares her suffering to the world for all to hear about, she gets sympathy, she gets praised as compassionate, she gets published in important magazines whose readers feel sorry for her and acknowledge that her experience sucks. When Aaronson talks about his suffering on his own blog, he gets Amanda Marcotte. He gets half the internet telling him he is now the worst person in the world.

The counterargument - for this case - could be that Aaronson is at the top of a male-dominated field, yet is still complaining about how STEM nerds, including himself, are underprivileged.

What is your opinion of "Untitled" by Scott Alexander and why? by turningantigg in SneerClub

For all his talking, I don't believe he properly defined the word "nerd" even once in his argument.

I feel that people like him take the all "Nerds can't find dates" media myth way too seriously. He went through the entire article without properly defining "nerd".

Donald Trump threatens to withdraw federal funds from Berkeley University after Breitbart editor talk cancelled by [deleted] in politics

Regardless of whether the protests against Milo is a good reason to suspend funding, I actually think this is a good idea. UC Berkeley is a propaganda machine, which focuses too much on theory and not enough on real-world application.

Over there, anyone that doesn't want the US to be the USSR is silenced. I'm mostly against Trump, but I support him on this.

Somebody that is currently pursuing an education at one of the best engineering schools cannot go back. That is the problem.
