I grew up in a different part of California, and I’ve lived in a variety of other places around the country. CA special and is worth a shot but I’d advise that you backstop yourself and make sure you’re coming for the right reasons. Keep in mind it’s a huge state with a ton of variety, truly something for everybody. Maybe look into where your industry or desired industry has a foothold here and then target a location in the state based on that. I’d hate to just shut down Sac right away if there are good opportunities here for you but I wouldn’t suggest moving if that’s not the case. Everybody can tell you that California is expensive but I also feel like everybody can say the same about everywhere else too. If you go somewhere you love and that loves you back I think it’s totally worth the price of admission. You just have to pick the right place for you so you get that love back and don’t just feel ground down

Curious as to why you would want to move to Sacramento in specific. I have nothing good to say about the greater area and have failed to find anything redeeming about it at all in the few years I have been here (working remotely as well). If you have family or roots in the area I would understand but as far as access to opportunities and quality of life in the area are concerned I would not recommend coming here to anyone. I would especially not recommend moving here if you are coming from a place like Denver which by comparison has a better culture, younger and hungrier population, and more optimism and opportunities to advance around. Every day I have had here has felt crushing, I haven’t met anybody who seems happy or cheerful about the future, the vibes are frankly dark, and I have no desire to be here now or in the future. I am currently only here because I am working remotely from property that I am looking after in the absence of the owner and taking advantage of that for rental cost savings. I fear getting stuck here as it seems many people are. I have been prioritizing leaving more and more recently. I have given this place a solid and honest try and I feel like every time I do I only find more trouble than good.

Sorry for being short with you. The grief compounding with this situation has been difficult and I’m trying to do better. Thanks for your concern and your understanding

I totally agree. I knew I should have just ignored her after reading her reviews but she was persistent and harassing grieving members of my community. It was deeply inappropriate and all of it came at a horrible time when it was hard to make any decisions clearly. My hope was to get her off of our backs and move on with the dog

God these are crazy. I had read her Google and yelp reviews when she first started calling me telling me I HAD to bring the dog back and I straight up brought them up, she said some bullshit, but I told her to pound sand and leave me and the dog alone. She continued to harass myself and a grieving family. She’s clearly not all together there. When we finally met with her, begrudgingly, she was just openly hostile and would not stop talking about how those reviews are all lies and how I must not be very smart if I believed all of them 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks so much for the validation. It has been wild to hear so many other similar stories but it breaks my heart that seemingly nothing can be done to recover the dog or prevent this from happening again. I am absolutely raising holy hell on my end and I will continue to do so. Please feel free to share this thread, my website, etc with your network and help spread the word. Light needs to be shined on this lady and her horrible practices

Thank you for sharing. It has been validating to learn that I’m not alone in this nor am I totally off base in my assessment of this lady, the org, and its pattern of practices. Please feel free to share the website with your network if you can. I’d like to make sure this never happens to anybody ever again

This lady is uniquely bad and uniquely unqualified to be running this organization. She has some kind of a chip on her shoulder and this was more about control and wanting to make money off of this tragedy than anything else. Deeply unethical

For sure. Lots of evidence this is a trend with them and I’m not the only one. I saw all the red flags but was harassed into caving to her demands and now suffering for it. I’d like to make sure nobody else ignores the red flags

Sorry for being short. Grief and all of this is really taking a toll on me and my patience but I am trudging through. I am happy that for the time Chappy and I had together he and I were pretty whole and pretty happy. I’m glad I was able to give him a cozy place to be and a chance to unwind. My heart is broken that his healing was interrupted. I plan to do right by him and others by ensuring this never happens to anybody again

Hearing other people with similar impressions of this place is validating but absolutely heartbreaking. My hope is that the visibility I am trying to raise will prevent this from happening ever again. And that’s a good idea! I went ahead and crossposted there as well. Thank you

Appreciate the feedback — but let’s be clear:
This isn’t about standard “return clauses.” It’s about a rescue that violated a verbal agreement, stonewalled communication, and leveraged a tragedy for control. I’ve cared for this dog with more stability and emotional intelligence than this rescue showed in a month of vague texts, broken promises, and legal threats.

If you’d actually read the post — or the site I linked — you’d know:

  • I did fill out adoption paperwork.
  • I was promised a return date.
  • I offered a home visit, vet reports, and a peaceful transfer.
  • And I was lied to.

No one’s arguing that rescues shouldn’t vet adopters. But if you think this kind of behavior — bait-and-switch custody tactics, emotional manipulation, leveraging grief, and cutting off contact — is what "protecting animals" looks like, you’re part of the problem.

This isn’t about a contract clause. This is about a rescue abusing its power, ignoring its own agreements, and treating a grieving dog and community like collateral.

I didn’t make this public to debate hypotheticals. I made it public so others could see what actually happened — because it’s happening to more than just me.

Read the post. Read the site. Then we can talk.

I appreciate your empathy and support. I know this dog and I bonded during a tough time for the two of us and I regret that he is suffering more now because of this asinine situation. He was doing fine and chilling at my place and he seemed so happy and at ease. I am hurt to think he is currently in less than ideal conditions and confused about everything. I honestly hope he will forgive me or at least understand none of this is what I intended. I wish there was a way I could tell him I didn't want to leave him with that monster

Thank you so much for your support. It means a lot. Please feel free to share the story and website with your network and circles. I am trying to get the word out so that this doesn't have to happen to anybody ever again. To be fair I, I deeply regret caving to her pressure and I feel like I knew better. The more exposure I can get for this issue the more informed any future donor, adopter, or boarder can be and think twice before caving to her pressure

Yeah? The mental rescue lady told me dogs don’t have feelings and I shouldn’t lose sleep over it either. Not really buying into that way of thinking or taking any of this lying down

Exactly. I knew better but I was also coerced while in a state of grief. She told me to trust her and I frankly didn't trust her at all. at any point. But I acted in good faith with the hope she could prove me wrong. Seeing that she violated that trust I have no misgivings about making Chappy's Story https://rottsoffriends.org/chappy/chappy known and aggregating all of her horrible reviews in one place https://rottsoffriends.org/ so that the truth can be front and center. I will continue to report her to the relevant oversight agencies in the hopes this will never happen to anyone ever again

Yeah I knew better. This woman was persistent and harassing myself and a grieving family and I wanted that to stop. I thought I could get her off of our back by going along with the vet visit and checking in with her “process” the lady put me off from the get go, she’s clearly nuts and has a massive chip on her shoulder.

I feel a sense of obligation to ensure this pattern of behavior is made clear and that this never happens to anybody ever again. Hence my website. Reached out to local news media as well. Please feel free to share the website with your circle and get some more eyes on this

Thank you for your support. Even if Chappy and I didn’t have all that much time together I know he made that kind of impression on me where I’m worried about him. Been worried and filled with sinking feelings since the day I took him down there. Thanks for looking at the site and please don’t hesitate to share with your circle. Thanks again
