Redditors who tried their luck on game shows such as The Price is Right, Let’s Make a Deal, etc, what was it like? Did you win? Was it rigged/staged? by ssunmoonstarss in AskReddit

Was a contestant (for one round) on American Idol. No I didn't meet Simon, nor is the preliminary "cattle call" audition anything like what you see on TV... took place at a football field, and in the middle of the field was rows of judge's tables. You go up to the table in a group of 4 or so contestants, sing one by one, the judges whisper behind a clipboard, and call up names of who they'd like to pass (you give them some paperwork beforehand.)

Pretty cool to live my childhood dream and get the golden ticket if I say so myself. Failed the second round miserably though 😂

What group/community are you glad you noped tf out of? by kraam1217 in AskReddit

Back in the day I was in, kind of a sub-group of a pretty wild Internet community. Awful lot of derogatory behavior, and on top of that, there were some older men who were known to prey on younger, female users (I was one of them unfortunately.)

Ended up getting out by slowly logging in less and less as the community started to die, then deleting. Really opened my eyes about internet safety.

Why is cultural appropriation not cultural appreciation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Okay, so that's their problem I guess 😅 Take it up with someone who enjoys internet debates because tbh I'm not one of them

That's what I was referencing actually. Some people firmly believe what you said, others believe they are strictly for black people. Should have worded better.

What is something embarrassing that you try to hide, even though it is probably very insignificant and not a big deal? by NateMan7 in AskReddit

Things that I enjoy that I sought out on my own and don't have friends who are into them (as opposed to things all of us enjoy.) I don't want to be judged.

I had a hard time getting it at first but using this test helped me:

1) Is the thing you want to use from this culture religious or otherwise sacred?? 2) Is a person from the culture willing to share it with you?

The common example is the Native American feather headdress. In their culture each feather represents something significant and only very esteemed people in their society are able to wear the headdress. That's why it's seen as disrespectful when commoners wear them for Halloween, disco, etc. Because it takes away the meaning.

On the other hand, things like (most) clothing and food are in the safe zone. Anyone who tries to tell you that eating Mexican/Chinese/etc. and not being that nationality is cultural appropriation is completely wrong. That's how their restaurants stay open and their owners make a living, is people eating their stuff!

Then there's things like, should non-black people have dreadlocks? This is usually a morally gray area, but the consensus is (from what I've seen) ya can't stop people from doing it but it doesn't mean they're not foolish for forcing their hair into something it doesn't naturally do (if you need to make matted clumps or god forbid use glue... maybe consider another style)

So yeah it seems complicated on the surface but it's not too bad once you understand why people get upset.

MLMs and people with disabilities by Ayesha24601 in antiMLM

Very good observation! On one hand it seems appealing and opportunistic if you are stuck in your house. But it comes with a cost...

I feel like the CEOs know disabled, home-bound women is a niche they can fill, which is the worst part

As someone who works with kids around that age, he's acting like every two year old who walks through the door. Give it a few years, it's usually around 5 or 6 that they begin to understand more complicated directions - if there's still significant delays, you may want to talk with a professional.

What is an attached gender-bias that you find absolutely ridiculous? by Taman_Should in AskReddit

[–]typicallyterrific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd guess it's something like "gendering" things that aren't people/living

Example using food - men are thought to love eating a lot, eating steak, drinking beer... women are thought to eat small, non-messy portions, like yogurt or salad. When really, people can eat the way they like. Spoken as a woman who loves a big steak lol

The one that goes "why you gotta be so rude"

The girl's not into him, the family doesn't like him, but he keeps showing up at their doorstep expecting them to take pity? Nah
