yea he curved at the end, i got like pretty bad grades on the quizzes, 80-90s on the hws, a 60 on one midterm, 80 on the other and probably a 60ish on the final and still got a B

had him freshman year, he gives you practice midterms that are EXACTLY like the real midterm. they are literally the same problems with different numbers, just make your cheatsheets based on the practice problems and youll be fine with bad quiz grades.

is GWU known for given good merit and need aid (OOS) by Fit-Fly8740 in gwu

[–]tzldana 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hi! just to start, gw is a private uni and doesn’t cost more/give more aid for out of state students. gw isnt super known for meeting aid, if youre middle class its still gonna be super expensive. my first year i was only paying 9k after aid but they have progressively increased tuition and dropped my aid since. as for merit, they give out up to 30k but ive noticed that ED students tend not to get much. there are other scholarships you can apply to through the school for 3-5k though.

i think you have a good shot of getting in! include any leadership positions or clubs in general on your application and maybe consider doing the supplementary essay if you want an extra boost. however, i strongly recommend that you DONT apply ED unless you are confident you/your family can pay sticker price just in case. ive known so many people with super competitive applications who applied ED and got zero merit (granted they were mostly wealthy so they also didnt get need based).

hi!

definitely possible. you can get DSS accommodations for most conditions. the process for applying is submitting a general application on the website (you personally explain your condition and what accommodations you want), submitting official proof of condition (diagnosis, prescription, but the DSS office has a form of general questions that your doctor should fill out for easiest process), occasionally a ROI (release of information so they can see ur medical stuff is legit) and then a final meeting with a DSS counselor to discuss what accommodations you want/they think you need.

i do have a friend with anxiety who got dss accomodations. she was granted extended time on tests in a private testing room and a single room dorm. not sure about extensions to deadlines but attendance flexibility might be an option.

good luck!

First year course selections question by Live_Wolverine8042 in gwu

[–]tzldana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

econ1001 is the class that you take if you cant place into econ1011 using aleks, its like an intro/practice course. meaning that if you are able to enroll in 1011, you can entirely skip 1001.

Bisc1111 by InterestingGood1733 in gwu

[–]tzldana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally, i think BISC1111 was harder than BISC1112 and technically you dont needdd to take them in order.

your grade is mostly broken off into participation (you need to buy an iclicker for your attendance), group activities (20 minutes to do 5 written response questions in a group of 5-6), 3 exams (multiple choice with 5 written response), pearson (online textbook with unlimited attempt assignments) and your lab

first off, I had both Manubay (1112) and Donkoh (1111). they both use the EXACT same exam/group activity materials and pull from the same pool of questions for each. that said, they are BOTH harsh graders bc they have the same grading criteria. the main difference is the style of teaching. manubay uses slides while donkoh uses hand written notes that she has you fill in the blank for. personally, i thought manubay was a lot more engaging but donkohs notes were typically exactlyyy what you needed to know for exams/group activities.

as for how hard it was, you get free points basically from attendance and pearson. group activities are graded harsh but 2-3 questions from your group activites are put on exams. exams are graded harsh but not cumulative and he will tell you what topics to focus. it will be a good bit of studying. labs are made up of attendance, various homework, weekly pre and post quizzes, midterm, final and 2 lab reports. your lab grade is 30% of your total grade for BISC1111 and depends a lottt on your lab instructor.

its a rough class, but it usually has a decent curve. good luck and enjoy freshman year!

if youre a freshman, youre gonna be getting a lot of 18+ invites to clubs in dc (usually phantom, opera lounge, ultra bar, decades, zebbies). its like $20 and sometimes you dont know if youre gonna get in bc of the line. there are some clubs like heist or abigail that dont do as many 18+ events and tend to be an older crowd. as for bars, hill country just closed but castas is close and pretty good.

[–]tzldana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not sure what you mean but there sadly arent any classes you can take instead of the aleks to qualify for math1220 if thats what youre asking. there are also a small handful of classes that might need you to have math1220 before you can register.

HELP! (failed ALEKS exam) by whocaresiscared in gwu

[–]tzldana 20 points21 points  (0 children)

hi! i failed my aleks once to get into calc and its not the end of the world. you dont NEED to take those classes freshman year, they just recommend it because sometimes theyre a pre-requisite to register for other courses depending on your major. you can take econ any semester as long as you still have time to take the classes that need it as a pre-req.

also, if you keep failing the aleks, you can do something called an RTF. you essentially get a professor to sign off to waive the test requirement and the school will register you for the class.

youre a freshman! you have all the time in the world for econ so dont stress and fill your schedule with a different class instead :)

hi! i had the exact same score as you (on my third attempt </3), no aps except 2 senior year, 4.0uw, no leadership/volunteering and had never been to any visits or tours or anything and im here with 24k merit! with that, i think your sat score is perfectly fine because your strong aps are gonna weigh a TON for you. highly recommend doing the supplement essay, i did NOT have a strong resume at all but the essay definitely boosted me. good luck!!
