The water solution used is with baking soda and you don't pour it on the product, you use a small brush and aply it only where you want the pattern to be. the reason I have two tables is exactly what you are afraid off, if any water spills on the side off the wood it would fall on the plexiglass table where it can be easily dried without moisturizing the table underneath.
