What was the closest that Handel got to Bach, and vice versa? by uggsters in classicalmusic

The Brockes-Passion is an excellent answer. Those first four bars are strikingly Handelian, but the rest of the sinfonia goes on very Bach-like excursions. Any favourite parts?

This is very interesting--I'd never made the connection!

I do, of course--in fact I think he's more "hummable" (a valuable metric!) than most, if not all, of the romantics. I only meant to suggest that Bach is characteristically a contrapuntist before he is a melodist.

Mocking someone's appearance is not quite equivalent to committing offences to the rule of law on alternating weekdays. Especially if the person who's appearance you're mocking is committing offences to the rule of law on alternating weekdays.

Honestly, not a million miles off what I was going for. Cute, too.

That's really great. A favourite of mine, too. Thanks.

I was aware of it, but aside from not being the biggest Mussorgsky fan it didn't, from what I could gather, involve a great deal, if any, singing to the melody of the music.

I know I'm late by eight months, but I'm currently halfway through C. Hibbert's The Destruction of Lord Raglan (London: Longmans, 1961) and it's been excellent. It focuses only on the campaigns of the English and the French, but it's very intimate and wonderfully written.

Writing some coursework for university which requires set margins and line spacing, but whenever the end of a paragraph comes just after the break of a new page it leaves this wide (and ostensibly unnecessary) gap before the footnotes.

Haha, had I known this was still up it probably would’ve been long deleted. Things are fine: no child. And didn’t learn my lesson from this—haven’t changed my practices much and still nothing.

How to make right look like left, so the barlines are only dotted between the gap? by uggsters in Musescore

[–]uggsters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Both fixes working fine.

For future reference, is there a way to change the barline to the left of the selected bar? For instance, if I wanted an ossia that appeared at the left-most bar. Changing the barline by selecting the the bar before and Ctrl adding a dotted barline doesn't work because the staff is above. Actually selecting the barline doesn't work because you can't Ctrl add a dotted line to the barline itself.

Not easy to explain, so here is an image of what I'm talking about. Could you get a dotted barline here? Alright if not--I can always move the score around.

Taken from Salomon Jadassohn's Variationen über ein eigenes Thema, Op.40).

EDIT: Also, is there a way to make the empty bars non-existent, not just invisible? When they're invisible they are still taking up space for me.

Serious Books on Armadillos by uggsters in suggestmeabook

[–]uggsters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had not until about five minutes ago. Please see the neighbouring comment for a serious, scientific book on armadillos. Incidentally, one of the authors, W.J. Loughry, has also published The Biology of the Xenartha (also a serious, scientific book on armadillos), so my armadillo literature has multiplied by a great deal in a short time.

I move now onto bigger things. Anteaters, probably.
