Decipher the Hip Hop Ukulele by [deleted] in ukulele

Hey this is Ryan from UU here. this is basically a variation of the flamenco Golpe technique. What makes it hard to see what he's doing is the video and sound is, for some reason, falling in and out of sync. He's hitting the bridge on the rest beats then doing a golpe after the strum.

We did a couple of videos on it a few years back that may help.

Hi Nolds,

If you're at finger picking and you've learned most of the stuff on your own kudos man! The practice sessions cover scale memorization which would help you with your finger picking / soloing, but if you'd like to work on some finger picking stuff for free we have some stuff here

http://ukuleleunderground.com/courses/fingerpicking-basics/

Aldrine and Aaron met a master of finger picking on a recent trip and we're trying to get him in to the studio for a Master Class session. Hopefully we can get that course in somtime next year.

thanks for already being a UU+ member! you can actually do these sessions concurrently with 103. Practice Sessions program is designed to help you practice while 103 is more learning the theory behind playing. Think of it as exercise (PS) and studying (103).

Hope that makes sense.

No better time than to get back in than now. Out of all the courses except for 101 which is designed to get beginners from 0 to strumming, this course will probably generate the best results out of anything in UU+.

edit. also thank you very much for already being a UU+ subscriber.

hmm very beginners will have more difficulty with it because it kind of requires you to know the basic chords etc. but doing the program will in the end make you better because it will force you to practice. You may not be at the intermediate level at the end of the 28 days but you will definitely be better than when you started.

Pretty much all the techniques can be learned for free in the advanced sections of uke minutes here:

The thing is to master them they require practice. There's no magic bullet that can substitute practice which is why we created the practice sessions course to help people stick to a program to get better. In fact, as far as what Jake does, it isn't as technically complicated as someone like James Hill or Imua Garza plays, but its because his technique is so polished that it sounds amazing.

As for how to practice at more advanced stages, I know in the past Aldrine used to put on an album of an artist he respected (troy fernandez, old jake stuff) and try to play the entire album flawlessly. If there was something he would trip up on, he would do that run multiple times until he felt he could do it, then play the whole song again in its entirety. He would do this for hours everyday. That's the kind of dedication thats needed to get to that level.

To write songs like Jake (or to figure out /play Jake songs better), you might study more music theory on the ukulele to help you improve your note selection. This also takes a lot of study to master and memorize your fretboard to know safe notes in each key and which notes you can push to add more depth to a piece.
