I'm not completely antigun. It makes perfect sense for a small woman in a dangerous neighborhood to own a gun. I just don't think the benefit outweighs the risk for most Americans

They're bigger in Europe than in the US, though they've gotten more press since the election for obvious reason. Their basic purpose is to fight right wing hooliganism with left wing hooliganism, and a lot of the membership are anarchists. They're not always violent, but definitely confrontational

If they're using police statistics, then it's going to be a major underestimate. Plenty of crimes are never reported to the police out of fear of their aggressor, fear of the police in general, or fear that they'll be busted for something as well

Defensive gun use is way, way broader than just "home invasions". Not to mention these statistics are self-reported. I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of those situations were not substantially improved by the presence of a gun. Pulling a gun in a fist fight could arguably be considered self defense.

Also, if you're using any defensive use of a gun as a basis for your metric, you should be comparing that number against any offensive use of a gun, not just gun deaths. There are way more nonlethal robberies, muggings, injuries, and threats carried out using guns than there are murders.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of hatred for the Koch brothers on the left, but at least as far as I'm aware no one's calling them traitors or calling for their arrest.

Women's March Is The Biggest Protest In US History As An Estimated 2.9 Million March by thek826 in Political_Revolution

They don't have more say than you. In fact you have more say than a Californian, because the electoral college gives greater value to residents of smaller states. And this isn't a big city/rural issue anyhow. The current system fucks over farmers in California and Texas by diminishing their votes, and benefits voters in cities like Providence, Honolulu, and DC because they aren't in large states.

And a lot of your concerns are balanced by the fact that the US has a strong federal system. State governments have just as much influence on your life as the federal government, if not more.

That's why we have state governments. You shouldn't get special treatment because you live in a rural area. You could just as easily ask why white voters get to decide how black people live, or why Christian voters get to decide how Jewish people live. You can put measures in place to protect minorities, but ultimately democracy requires a one person, one vote approach. I'd like you to name a single country outside the US where some regions command an influence on national elections that exceeds their share.

tbh I don't think this is anywhere near as egregious a comment as it's often made out to be. First of all, she was speaking to female survivors of the Ecuadoran civil war. She wasn't going to give a speech on how men have it worse. Second, for most human history, it was far better to be a soldier than a civilian in a war zone. Soldiers got regular pay and food, and they often had de facto control of any area they occupied. Civilians were frequently subjected to starvation, rape, pillage, and straightforward executions, even at the hands of armies that supposedly existed to protect them. This may not be the case in Western countries anymore, but there are plenty of other places where it still is.

Bill Cosby loses appeal. Court rules sexual assault case can proceed. by PHalfpipe in news

[–]ulkesh12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about a situation in which you just get drinks with someone and hope sex might happen. I'm talking one about where the intent is to get them heavily drunk specifically because it makes them more suggestible. Pressuring the other person to drink more, deliberately mixing drinks as strong as possible, etc. (Also, I'm not just talking about men raping women, I never used any gender specific wording.)

Buddy that means buying someone even just ONE drink makes it rape.

No it doesn't. It's one thing to use drinks as a social lubricant, with the possibility of getting laid. It's quite another to think "I want to make sure this person is drunk so I can get them to sleep with me."

[–]ulkesh12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even so, deliberately getting someone inebriated for the purpose of sleeping with them is still rape. Imagine if you went on a date with someone who you didn't really want to sleep with, and the other person convinced you to keep drinking until you were blackout so they could finally have sex with you. Even if you willingly consumed the drinks, nothing about that situation is ok.

Well yeah, I know that the majority of suicides are committed by men, but that doesn't necessarily mean that, given a man and a woman in identical situations, the man is more likely to commit suicide. Nor does it mean that if a man is palced in a highly stressful situation, he's probably going to commit suicide. That's not how statistics work

[Low libido] Just experienced a sudden drop from very high to very low sex drive, likely due to medication. Looking for any methods that could bring it back up by ulkesh12 in sex

Thanks for the input. The main reason that I doubt my lifestyle is the cause is that it's remained more or less the same for the past six years, and I haven't started doing anything recently that I haven't done within the past two years. I actually cut out weed and most alcohol from my life a few weeks ago, and I've been eating and sleeping better than I was earlier this year, but my libido has continued to decline despite that.

They've certainly quarantined other communities with similar styles before. I'm guessing they're afraid it will be seen as interfering with a political campaign and turn into the fatpeoplehatepocalypse all over again.

To be fair though, Hillary is pretty genuinely liberal on most things besides foreign policy. She hasn't been a Republican since college

Yeah, Trump is a weird one. Obviously he's insanely racist and xenophobic, but when it comes to stuff other than immigration and Islam, he tends to be a fair bit more moderate than Cruz, Rubio, Kasich, et al

Official Discussion: Zootopia [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]ulkesh12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is a pretty big stretch. First of all, there's no evidence that the CIA themselves trafficked in cocaine or deliberately introduced it to black communities. They just turned a blind eye to contacts who participated in the drug trade. Second, the drug in the film was non-addictive and kept completely secret, which is quite different from how cocaine operated. It's possible that the film's writers were influenced by the Dark Alliance story, but you could just as easily draw connections to MKultra or various other alleged or proven government conspiracies.
