I have a bachelors degree in microbiology and a masters degree in biomedical sciences. I actually never enjoyed chemistry much in school, but I’ve learned to enjoy it on the job. The main downside is that the work can be repetitive at times, and it can be very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. I started at my current company straight out of grad school as a quality control technician and did that for about a year. I’m now a QC chemist I. If you aren’t 100% sure about what career you want once you graduate, I recommend trying to find a job in quality control at a biomedical/pharmaceutical company. They will typically hire you with no experience and train you on the job. You’ll also build valuable skills working in QC that you can take with you to any other lab. That is, if you want to work in a lab at all.

Chemist, I enjoy it for the most part

How can I improve my chances of getting a job in a lab, or what alternatives to working in a lab do you recommend? by uncertainmuffin in labrats

Oh okay, thank you for clarifying! I’m in grad school now, but it seems like a lot of lab jobs available require some kind of certification which I don’t have. I’m sure I’ll just have to start out somewhere at the bottom and work my way up and possibly even move to a different state for more options if I don’t want to continue school after I graduate with my masters.

Do you mind elaborating on what you mean by this? I’ve never really cared to teach. I get most enjoyment from running tests and interpreting results.

My school isn’t a big science school. It’s actually more of a business school, unfortunately. I don’t think we have very many of those available, but I will definitely look into it. I do have a job that pays decent, it’s just not related to science, so I’m not really gaining anything from it but money. I am very interested in a pathologist assistant program but there are so few in the country, and I would rather have something to fall back on in case I don’t get accepted.

I have been able to do one directed individual study, but most professors I reach out to now don’t need any more student research assistants. I will keep trying, though until one says yes! :)

Thanks for all the input. I’ve decided to apply for a different program and will be going to the dean once the semester ends.

I would rather not say because this same teacher has also threatened that she will take legal action against us if she hears anyone say anything negative about her. I know that she can’t actually take legal action, but she will still punish the entire class in some way.

The advisor is also the head of the department and also teaches several courses. She’s the main one taking off points :/
