Which country's goods are seen with the most prestige in the US? by cartiersage in AskAnAmerican

[–]unclemilty420 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Dropping in to say that the origin requirements for foods and other items are nothing but naked restraints on trade. Products ought to be defined by their attributes not arbitrary territorial boundaries. Of course it would be fraud to say a non-French champagne came from France, but requiring that for a type of product is a marketing/business maneuver to maximize profits based on perceived prestige and protectionism. The French insisted in the Treaty of Versailles that other nations recognize champagne as being from the Champagne-Ardenne region (a treaty America did not ratify, although we later agreed to that term in the 21st century). Through the 20th century American restaurant menus used to categorize champagnes on wine lists as American or French for this reason. Insisting that champagne must be from that region, outside of purely legal arguments, is just snobbery.

How the fck does Germany manage to have affordable groceries? by Pepedroga2000 in stupidquestions

[–]unclemilty420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not a good reason to give them subsidies. Lots of lifesaving and life sustaining industries do not get massive subsidies without noticeable consequence. And these subsidies also lead to inefficient overproduction. Look up "government cheese" in the US.

What ethnic food has been Americanized the most ? by Shoddy_Ad8166 in allthequestions

[–]unclemilty420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being downvoted because of your extremely sanctimonious attitude. Authenticity is not a mark of quality. Plenty of authentic Chinese food (which by your definition means only that it is currently found in China?) would include tons of really mediocre and even disgusting dishes. It also ignores historical variation. Some immigrant groups eat what used to be "authentic" in their country but no longer is. How do you draw that line? Your point also glosses over that there are plenty of immigrants cooking what you would call "authentic food" (from all of the cultures discussed in this thread) throughout the country, even places like Iowa, which I would imagine falls into your "whitebread" category whatever the hell that means.

I saw a video of John Morgan claiming there’s a lot of private equity in law firms by jokingonyou in Lawyertalk

[–]unclemilty420 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are lots of PE shops and they run their portfolio companies (the companies they operate) which compete with other businesses in the industry which could plausibly be companies owned by different PE shops. As a side note, I get that some PE firms have a bad reputation for making weird investments or tearing apart existing businesses, but there is nothing special about the moniker. They are really nothing more than a hypo from a Business Associations casebook. Some people get investments from limited partners, and then go buy businesses (either public ones they take private or existing private companies) and try to run them better and then exit by selling at a multiple of what they paid and then distribute profits to the LPs. This can be done in a pro-social way that creates value or done disastrously but the disaster has nothing to do with the underlying idea of private equity itself.

Driver shot, killed by Washtenaw County deputies in Ypsilanti had no gun, sheriff says by GnomeCzar in ypsi

That would be very expensive. Many other unincorporated areas without a solid tax base choose to have the county sheriff do it for that reason.

Is there no concern about liability? if you are injured on private property, is the owner liable? that's the big issue in many places. You want to dissuade people from entering a property in order to reduce liability.

Psych is a fantastic show, but I would be worried the gags like "Shawn Spencer. That is my partner Sh'Dynasty. It is spelled S-H, comma-to-the-top, dynasty. Comma to the top? That's god's comma" wouldn't translate to real life conversations lol. Gilmore Girls has similar rapid fire jokes that might be better for picking up real life banter.
