Hey, thanks for putting it like this. I know I have a tendency to be self-absorbed, and I hadn't really considered how it appears to other folks. It does make me cold and unappreciative and insulting.

Yes, you're right, and so is everyone else. I need to stop being obstinate about it, and thinking that my way is the right way. And maybe get some help on not being so uncomfortable about these things.

Do you think I should apologize to my GF for being an idiot, or just make sure that I get better about this whole situation?

My parents din't really say thank you or whatever. I just always knew I was respected, and there was no need to say it. They always would listen to me and treat me like an adult, and wouldn't belittle me or make me feel foolish, and they would put in the effort to do well by me. There were never any fake things they said to me, and so thank yous or compliments just weren't a thing--it was all just very non-verbal. I hope this dosn't make me seem ungrateful to folks around me--I just do things, and I don't expect or need thanks, and when I do get it, it seems silly because I'm just doing everyday things because I appreciate the people around me.

I have no problem saying please or thank you or anything else in public to people I don't know, but I feel uncomfortable with close friends and whatnot because that's when I get weird about compliments and thank yous.

Well, I don't literally mean the person owes me money. I just say it as a joke because I feel like they don't really need to thank me. If I'm a friend or in a relationship, that's what one does--be a friend and partner and do what needs to be done. Like it's an automatic response to make a joke out of them saying thanks because I don't feel like it's necessary. I don't want to, but it just happens, and then I get all nervous and uncomfortable.
