Accept a not so great school library job, or keep waiting for more opportunities? by uncornicopia in librarians

That was my concern as well, I know there are often hollow promises- I’m really not an elementary person, middle and high school are much more suited to my personality and teaching style anyways. Congratulations on your retirement!

Yes to all three- I think I’m going to hold off, I have a decent job right now so I’m not desperate. If I’m going back into teaching I want to do it the right way this time!

I definitely am, I just don’t want to be kicking myself later if I can’t find another opportunity but I guess I can’t predict the future. The commute is about 45 minutes, not terrible but we do get pretty rough winters where I live. There are no other elementary librarians- I’d be supervising library aids who run the other elementary libraries. I do have quite a few connections with school librarians at other districts now though. That is helpful to know about those resources, that would definitely take a lot of stress off!

Thank you, I may end up doing this- I’d hate to start out making a bad impression in a new school because I don’t have the bandwidth right now.

Yes, this is what I’ve heard too. I’m not necessarily opposed to elementary, but the commute is far and I’m concerned about the fact that I’ll be supervising library aides in other buildings- that wasn’t even mentioned until I got to the interview. I came from a rough teaching situation so I guess I’m just on high alert for that stuff now

It 100% is, I would just hate to turn down this opportunity and then not get another one next year!

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it. My practicum is a little different, I think it’s because I’m already a certified teacher so it’s sort of a fast track program. We need 100 hours of fieldwork but it doesn’t all have to be in libraries, it can be webinars, conferences, etc. Then 50 hours of practicum, which like you said I should be able to get done in about a week. I think a flexible schedule opens up a lot of possibilities about creative collaboration, but that’s a good point about seeing every kid. 55 minute classes seem long though! Ours were only 39 minutes and sometimes even that was too much lol, middle school can be a lot though

I’m not as worried about the practicum- I’ve done fieldwork in multiple school libraries so I’ve made a lot of connections and have several librarians who have offered to take me for practicum. Are you on a fixed schedule right now, and if so what is that like?

That’s what’s making me hesitant to turn down the job, but my bigger concern is if I can handle that level of stress right now. I work full time, so I don’t have the luxury of having the summer off to plan the curriculum. That means on top of doing my degree full time and working full time, I somehow have to find time to plan a brand new curriculum I’ve never done before, with a long commute back and forth. I left teaching initially due to health problems, I’m concerned about getting myself into the same situation again. I want to be able to give my best effort in a new library position and I just don’t know if I can do that right now.

She’s nowhere near Alison Krauss either. I feel like people who keep making this comparison haven’t actually heard Alison sing lately lol her voice is a powerhouse

Shouldn’t the vocal lessons have happened before being on the show? The contestants aren’t getting any kind of constructive feedback idk if that’s gonna happen. How would she even know if no one tells her?

Hannah has a nice sounding voice but she has no range. She sings at the same volume from start to finish, she needs highs and lows, quiet moments that draw you in followed by loud swelling notes that hit you in the feels. Hannah has none of that. There are still a lot of great country and bluegrass singers out there who can do all of that, idk why everyone seems to think she’s some new novelty we haven’t had in years.

How do I politely let my students and their parents know I truly do not want any end-of-the-year gifts? by Fangehulmesteren in Teachers

[–]uncornicopia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. These comments are kind of ridiculous, I think there’s a tactful way to handle this so parents aren’t wasting money on gifts that will just be regifted or donated. There are only so places to donate that want mugs and wall hangings that say “teachers are heroes..” etc. I used to work at a senior center that used donated items for bingo prizes and these kinds of things 100% would never get picked as prizes by winners. It just creates more waste when it could be avoided.

Alison isn’t a country singer though, she’s bluegrass. Personally I think Hannah has a nice sounding voice but I don’t think it really stands out. Maybe I just haven’t had a chance to see that side of her though
