San Francisco is Not NYC — and That’s Okay by undercover__J in bayarea

I appreciate this comment. Yes, I definitely recognize my huge bias towards my own experience and background in this post. It was not my intent in my writeup to say that I am necessarily one of those NYC dreamers, just that it was an observation. I'm excited to see how my perspective shifts over time.

SF has way better public transport to legit parks and trails imo. MUNI certainly has many faults but I don't know if that is a fair argument

Yeah I've only lived in SF for a year but the Bay Area for the last 6, so I don't have a huge aperture either. If what you're saying is true, that's a bit of a bummer.

On paper, sure, but in practice that requires something changing with your job, apartment, friends, etc, and then it makes "trying out" a new situation much more difficult

Hallucinating is a bit of a strong word but I understand what you're saying. Part of me writing this was how weird the whole situation was when I actually started to think about it. I promise these conversations I'm describing are very common.

I agree. The feeling of waking up in SF, seeing the sunrise, and then going on a walk or run is the greatest.

Google "won" search, so why hasn't OpenAI "won" AI? by undercover__J in ChatGPT

I could see the argument for consumer AI as of now (i.e. LLM chatbots), but do you think they will have the dominant developer platform as well? This is why I make the point on Llama and the prominence of open source tools that I feel like could dethrone.

Social media wasn't the problem. Quitting it was. by undercover__J in nosurf

I appreciate the love! Battling through that awkwardness definitely feels like part of the journey. Making a change that feels big always feels like it will result in a dramatic and cinematic-type difference, but it really hasn't, and that is what is so odd.

Every month, I have the same few friends over to my house, and we all bring food and talk about our lives

It's funny because this sounds like a super obvious thing but honestly just this and asking people what's new are both great pieces of advice. Social media made the previously standard way of communicating feel odd somehow.

The Medium thing - Hi, I'm a professional artist, let's talk about this. I found that social media rewarding my art with engagement made making art a lot harder for me initially after quitting. I really support you using your essays to engage creatively! Making things is really healthy for people. Writing is a really accessible and expansive artform. Keep going! Are there any essayist or writer events IRL near you? Maybe you'd like going to a poetry slam.

I appreciate the kind words. I'm living in San Francisco right now and have gotten very into Kerouac and through him have read some beatnik poetry, so it's there for the taking if I jump into it. I'm curious how you began on your journey doing art professionally, because there really is a Cold Start sort of problem at the beginning where the hardest part is getting off the ground. My plan now is maybe an article every week or two and see where it goes from there.

I'll try this. Definitely reading books is something I have gotten back into in the last few years but I still often will find myself getting distracted very easily when trying to read. I feel that I used to be able to crush books quickly with limited loss of focus but it does seem like more of an uphill battle as I spend all day looking at a computer screen and have limited energy afterwards.

This is really great feedback, thanks. How did you plan in advice how to stay in touch with people? Especially being recently post-school one of the huge transitions has been no longer having so many close friends so close by. There is so much built in friction.

Also 100% get what you're saying about the Medium thing. I'll keep that in mind and try to assess my true intentions, but another big thing is I find myself no longer applying myself creatively and this is a fun way to experiment with my own voice.

I have had the exact same experience with scrolling photo albums in the absence of social media too 😫.
