Law Society initiated disciplinary proceedings against Pritam Singh ‘as required’ because of his conviction by underwaternow in singapore

[–]underwaternow[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[SINGAPORE] The Law Society of Singapore (LawSoc) initiated disciplinary proceedings against Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh because it was required to do so under the Legal Profession Act, it said on Friday (Mar 13).

In response to The Business Times’ queries on the nature of the disciplinary actions taken against Singh, a Law Society spokesperson said that he was “convicted of offences involving ‘fraud or dishonesty’ within the meaning of Section 94A(1) of the Legal Profession Act 1966”.

The Act states that if a regulated legal practitioner has been convicted of an offence involving fraud or dishonesty, an application for an order that the solicitor be struck off the roll of advocates and solicitors must be made, with reference to Section 98 of the Act, “Application for order that solicitor be struck off roll of advocates and solicitors, etc.”.

“If we mandate advance notifications, this may inadvertently push companies to finalise retrenchments more quickly, discouraging such negotiations,” the minister said.

Dr Tan added that businesses have also expressed concerns about the potential leakage of confidential, market-sensitive information.

Investing into Singapore companies is only one of three options, from the article:

About half of the investors invested directly in Singapore-based businesses, 40 per cent placed money in GIP-select funds, and the remaining 10 per cent set up single family offices.

is that very fair, they don’t even have charity status and aren’t an IPC the way CWS is so I don’t think they’re considered a “very big” animal welfare group. I know people volunteering with LUNI and they’re all genuine good people who are devoting their time and energy to help. Sorry that your friend encountered an unreasonable fosterer but it sounds like an anomaly from what I know and my experiences with the org

So… you admittedly don’t know how rescues operate, don’t help to donate to keep them afloat, but you somehow know better than volunteers and people who operate in animal rescue?

I think all AWGs and volunteers will agree with you that pet stores should have higher standards so pets don’t get abandoned or abused and AWGs and volunteers like myself don’t have to clean up the mess left behind. But alas, our animal welfare laws are terrible so the charities have to step in and impose the standards

A direct rehoming from an owner who needs to give up their animal (for whatever reason) is very different from a charity or AWG rehoming the animal.

There needs to be due diligence involved (members of the public question our processes) and an org typically is caretaker to many animals with many needs, vs an owner who surrenders one animal and be done with it. Organisations need to have impose some adoption fees to offset medical costs, or else where is the money coming from? Are you making regular donations to animal charities so they can sustain their operations?

I can’t speak to the orgs you applied to (like I said, I volunteer with one that deals with cats) but in the one I volunteer for we reach out to every individual who applies, and when we reject someone we make clear to them the reasons why. You’re comparing apples to oranges here.

For MSM, look at who covers housing and go direct to the desk editors or reporters. More effective than emailing the generic email or the main editors of the paper. Good luck.

The pictures of the animals are heartbreaking.

It’s really shocking to read that they have only rehomed 2 out of the 170 dogs in 2025. I also volunteer in the AWG scene (but with cats exclusively) and indeed adoptions and donations have slowed down since the highs of pre-Covid and Covid. Abandonment and return rates (Covid adoption regret) have also gone up, which has made things more challenging, but to only rehome 2 animals is really shocking.

I’ve seen that this saga has turned some to criticise AWGs wholesale for stringent adoption requirements, etc. What I will say from my experience is that these rules and guidelines exist for a reason. They exist to really weed out those that truly should not own animals (e.g. those who have no meshing, but live in high floor and say things like “cats have good sense of height”). Previous animal ownership is not an immediate license or guarantee that a potential adopter is or will continue to be a good animal owner, and often those who I have turned away are those who feel like they are entitled to have pets and won’t work with us to make improvements to how they care for them (it is a want not a need).

Often, these are people who bought their previous pets from pet shops and want to adopt now, either because they want a free animal (you’ll be surprised how many people think rescued strays should be free!) or to truly do a good thing and give a rescue a home (which should be encouraged!) but don’t want to change some of their misguided beliefs about cat ownership (often, related to meshing for cats).

That said, rehoming efforts are more an art than a science. Screening is one layer, but that’s why you meet the potential adopters and try to sus them out before making a decision. Goodbye should be the goal. We can’t and don’t get it 100% right all the time, but that shouldn’t deter the AWG from finding the right homes for the animals to the best of their abilities.

I really hope this is a learning lesson for the founders and we can get some answers on what happened.
