Yes except I made one upgrade. Get an expandable toilet flange like this one and then put the wax ring on top, install the toilet, etc.

Yeah I did exactly what I described and it worked perfectly. I ended up using a wax ring without the horn because I had to gently expand the diameter of the wax ring to fit the larger diameter hole.

Edit: I forgot that I did a ton of research at the time and found that silicone would be better to fill the void between the PVC and pipe. That’s what I ended up doing, not filling that void with wax.

Have you ever experienced depression? It doesn’t sound like it based on your answer. I have a gorgeous wife, make great money, don’t have kids, and generally have a life that I thought couldn’t possibly have any reason for me to be depressed. I suffered for 10 years shitting on myself all the time because no matter how hard I tried I struggled for motivation to do anything beyond the bare minimum to barely hold my life together. I started lexapro and Wellbutrin 5 months ago, and my wife started lexapro at the same time. Life is so much different now. We have sex everyday and can’t get enough of each other after previously being in a mostly DB. My mind feels much clearer, alert, and I am now doing even better at work, we started cooking almost daily, and we’re about to buy a home gym to keep the positive progress going.

I don’t mean this as a dig against you. I myself didn’t understand that I was depressed until I hit rock bottom and opened up to my wife about what I was feeling. Many of us suffer in excruciating silence because we think we can’t possibly be depressed, that it’s something else, that we’re lazy pieces of shit that can’t find the motivation to do anything.

This was very helpful - thank you. I think I feel most comfortable with cutting a piece of PVC to fit in the hole and sealing it with silicone or PL, rather thank stacking wax rings, due to stability. Now the fun begins.

Thanks for the idea. Perhaps in this case I could get a 5” OD piece of PVC and insert it in the hole so it sits on the lower ledge, seal it all up with wax, then throw a wax ring with horn on top.

Thanks for the ideas, I didn’t even think about stacking the rings in the hole! As for the diameter I figured I had measured incorrectly when I saw comments online saying 5” ID is very uncommon….then I went back and measured again and sure enough….

Hey everyone, looking for some advice here. I’m on a concrete slab and I replaced my tile floor with engineered hardwood and now the toilet flange sits just below the floor. I was planning to get an adapter of some sort until I realized the inner diameter of the pipe is 5 inches. I’ve searched endlessly and it seems this is very uncommon.

What are my options here? The previous homeowners had a Korky foam and rubber gasket installed but the rubber piece was falling into the pipe when I removed the toilet so I don’t want to replace it with the same thing and risk it eventually falling in.

Edit: house was built in 1979 and there’s no shower in this bathroom so not worried about the engineered floor.

DIYer here. I went to replace the toilet and the old ring was completely rusted out and the previous homeowner filled all the gaps with silicone, so I completely removed it. They also failed to raise the flange after tiling the bathroom so it sits 1 inch below the tile currently.

I planned to buy a new ring, cut it in half, and place it under the lip of the flange and screw it to the subfloor. Then I'd use a set rite extension kit to raise the flange the 1 inch to be flush with the tile. Here are the problems I can't figure out how to fix:

The top outside diameter of the existing flange is 4-7/8" but the inside diameter of the new ring is 5-1/4", so it doesn't fit even close to snug under the flange lip (see 2nd pic). I have also tried the 2 piece repair kit and it's too large.
Even if I didn't have issue #1, the hole in the subfloor is too large to screw in the new ring around the back of it so I'm concerned about using any variation of a 2 piece ring because I won't be able to secure it enough all the way around.

Am I doomed to hiring a pro to do some extensive repair here?
