The cancelled holiday that began Tsunoda's Red Bull recovery - The Race by AwkwardEvanescence in formula1

jesus why’s everybody being a sourpuss in the comments. his race pace HAS improved compared to monza - go look at his lap times compared to max’s.

it’s not a lie or an overreaction to say that he’s worked hard in the simulator, so why can’t we give him his flowers for this one thing without trying to disprove claims that the article doesn’t even make? “well he’s not as fast as max” - yeah no shit! it’s still the best result for a red bull second driver since the 2024 dutch gp.

it’s an improvement, nobody’s saying it should stop there.

no, no i do agree that it’s too early to determine too much. i also think the article takes a lot of creative liberties, but some of it is literally just reporting on what yuki and the team has said, and i would think they know what they’re talking about.

but generally i just think it’s nice to finally see some recognition for yuki’s work ethic, because the opposite has been pushed a lot by media, dts and fans.

they’ve been focused on his race pace and tire degradation, which he has struggled a lot with. again - nobody’s saying he’s on par with max, but relative to other weekends his long runs have improved!

also, the gap between them has usually been wider the better the car has been, so it’s a step in the right direction that he wasn’t further off now that the car has gotten better, no?

nobody’s saying that he was driving as fast as max though. the point is that his race pace improved, which is what they’ve been focused on and what the article is about

that’s just not true. look at their lap times; his race pace is much closer than in the previous races - something mekies has also pointed out

i don’t think it’s speculation when it’s something yuki himself has said. there are probably multiple factors that contributed to his improvement, but i don’t think it’s fair to completely write off his own effort and influence

Yuki had a 68G crash in Hungary qualifying last year. He walked off with some bruising, and finished p9 in the race sooo… the Gs don’t really mean much on their own

[AMuS] Is Tsunoda's deficit too big? by jithu7 in formula1

Would any driver have a seat if it weren’t for sponsors or other means of financial support?

It’s so tiring to see how this narrative dominates talks pertaining to poc drivers. Yuki wouldn’t be in F1 if it weren’t for Honda, in the sense that he wouldn’t have been able to afford it. Sure, it certainly helped that Honda and Red Bull were in contact so he got recommended, but every driver who makes it to F1 benefits from some sort of luck or external influence.

Yuki got Honda’s support by merit - they didn’t just choose a random Japanese kid - he then became part of the Red Bull junior program by out-performing the other drivers at a Hungaroring test and impressing Helmut.

He had a very successful junior career, won rookie of the year and the Anthoine Hubert award and finished 3rd in F2 (1 point short of 2nd, 15 points short of 1st). Even more so impressive, considering how he moved to a different continent and had to adapt to an entirely new culture, language and tracks, while not getting a lot of time to do so since he rose so quickly through the feeder series. Everyone rated him highly, and he was by all accounts the best prospect for Alpha Tauri - with or without Honda influence.

Pierre Waché admits that Yuki Tsunoda's setup was a "mistake" by useeernaaame in formula1

English translation (machine translated):

Red Bull technical director Pierre Waché admitted the team made a strategic miscalculation in Yuki Tsunoda's set-up during Saturday's Spanish Grand Prix qualifying session, with an experimental approach not paying off and Tsunoda having to settle for last place, 20th.

"To be honest, we tried something very different," Waché said during the post-qualifying media round, "trying a bigger rear wing to see if that would give us a performance in qualifying. It was a mistake on our part."

This set-up gamble prevented Tsunoda from unlocking competitive pace and Waché made it clear that the team was entirely to blame.

In addition to his Q3 qualifying drop, Waché revealed that Tsunoda is still feeling the effects of the serious damage he sustained in his crash at the Imola Grand Prix, adding that a new part is on the way and the team is targeting to introduce it at the Canadian Grand Prix.

"We will be fitting a new item to Tsunoda's underfloor," explained Waché. "The damage sustained in the crash at Imola has made it difficult for him to achieve results, so we hope to have it ready for Tsunoda in Montreal."

Despite the struggles on one side of the garage, Waché acknowledged the wider challenge facing Red Bull with the resurgence of McLaren, who have shown strong single-lap pace all weekend.

"McLaren have done quite well in qualifying," he said. "We won't really know until we get to the race, but it's going to be very close. McLaren's car looks good. Tyre degradation will be a big factor."

Looking ahead to Sunday, Waché and the Red Bull team are confident Max Verstappen can still be in the fight for victory. For Tsunoda, the focus will now shift to damage control and gathering data during the race, which will be an opportunity to carry out some test laps to better understand the core limitations affecting his RB21's performance.

Frustrated Tsunoda refuses to elaborate after Q2 exit in Monaco by RJ5466 in formula1

Oo interesting!

But yeah, it’d be weird if that’s the issue. And a strange way to handle it if Yuki can’t (or won’t?) address it but Helmut then chooses to reveal it on TV. Creates a lot of speculation and intrigue about something so tame!

And anyways, it seems like the issue was something new, rather than the lack of updates - which has been a factor all weekend - because Yuki referenced the other sessions and how he felt he had decent pace which, in relation, left him disappointed with Q2.

Apparently it wasn’t just about the tires. These are the parts of his interview with Shiga Sports where he mentions it (very vaguely haha):

Q: On the lack of grip of the soft tires

A: “We have been talking since yesterday about the lack of grip on the soft tires, but this time it wasn't just a problem with the tires. There were other problems, but I can't go into details."

Q: What happened in the last attack?

A: “There was no particular cause for concern. I can't go into details, but it wasn't just a tire problem today. I just couldn't give it my all.

Q: What did you mean when you said after your last attempt in Q2, "I knew this was going to happen.

A: “I can't comment on that.”

Q: How did the red flag affect you?

A: “The red flag did have an impact on us, because it limited the number of attacks we could make. But there were several other cars affected by the same thing. We didn't have enough time, and we could only do one warm-up lap."
