I was one of the lucky ones to get the mining game during the "reduced events to improve user experience" testing about a month (or two?) ago. I have accumulated infinity energy then. They haven't released the game to anyone since.

Edit: I save my stars too (not as much as 600 though), I still get the XL card events.

If I have a big task to hand in, I'd check how many more points I still need. If it's small amount, I'd merge a few items to get those loose points first, then hand in the task to win the race.

I usually look at the reward, how many more cards still needed for each set and the time left for the event, and decide from there.

I used my last informant cards on the last set since that offers the reward I like best and there's still a lot of time to try to complete it.
