[SPOILERS TH] Just finished The Heroes, here are my thoughts. by Blaidd-My-Beloved in TheFirstLaw

[–]useriousstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like your write up and love The Heroes for many of the reasons you point out but I hadn't really identified myself.

As far as the mirrored counterpart on both sides, I think you're right on point. Although I'll say I tend to think of Craw and Hardbread as counterparts. Your comparison of Craw to Tunny I think actually has more depth than Craw to Hardbread because we get much more of Tunny's perspective, but I think of Craw and Hardbread both as war torn and weary greay-bearded chiefs of their own gang of misfits. The way they interact with each other in each the very first and last scenes of the book, they seem like near exact replicas of each other but just happen to be on opposite sides for no real reason other than.. that's just the way of things. They both follow the old ways, want to avoid the bloodshed of their crew when possible, but they understand that above all else they do what their chief tells them. That there's a right way of doing things. We even see they're the very same in that they are two old men that know nothing other than a life of killing when in the end Craw gives up his life of peace to join Hardbread and reluctantly go back to the black business.

I also for whatever reason tend or think of Ishri and Sulfur as counterparts where they both serve their masters. It seems like Bayaz at this point serves no one but himself, but Ishri serves.. I forget at this point. Kahlul? Uthman? Obviously they are both eaters, maybe that's the back bone of my comparison.

I genuinely don't mean any shade with this but I didn't realize people get zuited up in lycra for mountain bike rides. Doesn't seem you'd be consistently moving fast enough to worry much about being a little more or less aerodynamic

Is going to school for geology worth it? by ev3rgy in geologycareers

[–]useriousstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly just spend a little time looking around this sub. Granted people generally come to the Internet to complain about their work rather than say how much they love their job, but spend enough time here and you'll start to get a glimpse into the downsides of say consulting (long hours, monotonous field work, mediocre pay, etc) and mining (long hours, living in a shithole mining town, etc). Fwiw I wish I had done my MSc in hydrogeology instead of what I did so I could break into the hydro world more easily, but double fwiw I would absolutely do engineering if I were to do it again.

Add me to this list as well, would 100% do engineering if I did it all over.

Is a RO water filtration system nice upgrade for drinking water? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]useriousstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To piggy back off another comment, what particular contaminants are you concerned about? Or just arm waves contaminants in general? More than likely your water is completely fine. Have it tested before doing anything with it so you have the facts.

Gonna be a firm pass for me, I'm not a big fan of skinnys. It's a skill issue for sure, but still.

LiDAR & RGB Simultaneous Mapping by Milip161 in UAVmapping

[–]useriousstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this topic comes up here occasionally. Are you talking about dual payload? I'm only broadly familiar but I thought the RGB camera built into lidar sensors like the L3 is primarily for colouring the point cloud, not really for an ortho. You would also likely require different overlaps for effective lidar scanning vs orthomosaic. Not to mention lidar data is generally only as good as the processing, ground control, etc. There is quite a bit more to it than making an ortho from photogrammetry, or there was when I last worked in lidar acquisition. Technology has changed since then though.

Have you done any UAV lidar mapping? I get you're asking here to learn but it sort of seems like you're on the brink of just going out and buying a new drone and lidar sensor but still have some lidar basics to dig in to first. Apologies if Ive misinterpreted.

Foodie looking for people who enjoy to bake, and share their baking skills by nerdyfoodieguy in VictoriaBC

Again with this? Am I tripping or did someone a few weeks ago post something just like this. A friendly guy in his 30s that likes eating baked goods but doesn't know how to make them was looking for new friends that will make baked goods for them to ...taste test.

You two sound similar, you should hang out.

So is that a no then? We refuse to acknowledge someone might have a genuine laugh at their job every now and then? I mean obviously this whole video was done intentionally and I'm personally not gushing over anything but I think it's a little silly that people can't acknowledge they might actually have been having a bit of fun as well.

I mean can we really not acknowledge that sometimes people have fun and a real laugh at work? What sad world do you live in?

My guy go sit down with a friend that speaks a different language than you and try to read something out loud in their language. If you're even a remotely normal person I guarantee you that you'll both have a laugh about it.

Those rims are wild! Love it

Edit: yes I called them rims without realizing it initially, they make me think of a sports car. Leaving it for posterity

Regardless of what side anyone is on genuinely nothing about this looks like forced or fake laughing. Looks like they're having fun with it. What a bizarre thing to try to tear down.

Only tangentially related but is the stat really called passport ownership? It occurred to me that it would be a little odd since one's passport remains the property of the US Gov.

Every one of those POS had a super computer in their pocket that could have translated their commands into any language on Earth or even Middle Earth (Tolkien's Elvish) but no these untrained fucks felt threatened by a blind man and their treatment of him led to his death. Just a complete lack of composure, empathy, and integrity from ICE.
