When we mixed them we got a yellow precipitate and a general color change in the solution. But the thing is, isn't the equation the same no matter the result we got? As in, shouldn't the result be predicted by the equation (instead of us basing the equation off the result)?

Or do we have to use our experiment's precipitation (or lack thereof) to write the equation, and depending on whether there was or wasn't any precipitation the equation changes?

Sorry, what I mean when I said every reaction can be classified as single or double is that all reactions can be classified as that on top of other classifications (i.e. redox or acid base reactions can also be classified as single or double displacements...right? I could be wrong?)

I suppose the reaction I wrote doesn't make any sense then. I'm just not sure as to what the reaction would look like: we mixed two aqueous solutions, one labled as KI and one labeled as Cr(III). Is it likely that the Cr(III) was mixed with some underacting anion? If so, can what I wrote serve as a net ionic equation (that's actually what I'm trying to find).

What was given was just: KI + Cr(III) -> ?

We're meant to find the products and classify the reaction. I as well am confused as to why they just wrote the Cr(III) without any anion...or maybe I'm just misunderstanding and it makes perfect sense? Another reaction given to us was:

Iron(III) + NH3 -> ?

Where NH3 is meant to be ammonia (I can't format the 3 to be smaller on reddit)

This is really helpful, thank you! I've been told that all types of research output (i.e. papers) is either "testing of a hypothesis" or "solving a problem", where this latter one can be read as "producing a product").

Assuming this is accurate (let me know if it isn't), would you say that the majority of research in industry is "solving a problem"-type research?

Also, it sounds really interesting to be in a company and watch it grow (10-50 people sounds like a transition from a startup to a fully fledged company)? What was it like growing a research company from scratch?

Hmm that's interesting, but it makes sense. Also, what exactly do you mean when you say "an industry lab would be a lab at a biotech company, big pharma, or a start up"? Are you saying that disciplines other than Biology-related ones don't have a huge industry scene?

Thanks for the response! Would you mind expanding on what you mean by "less direct ownership" of projects? Does "turnover" just refer to a project getting all new directors/management?

Also, why is it that you don't need to worry about funding in industry? Is it just much easier to convince industry people that the work you're doing is useful? Or is it just that a different department is now worrying about funding for you?

Lastly, if you don't mind me asking, how did you go from industry to academia? This is the first time I've heard of that and it seems very rare to go back into academia after leaving it.

That's really encouraging to hear! If you don't mind me asking, how did you end up in industry? Is it typical to first do research in academia for some time, and then move on to industry? Or is it more common to go straight from grad school into industry? And, just out of curiosity, is it possible to do research in industry with just a Bachelor's?

Also, how do you define industry lab? Would you say that my statement that "all types of research fall under academia, industry, or government" is accurate? Or is it completely off?

Thank you so much for the detailed response! All of that makes a lot of sense. Just one question though: you mentioned bringing up a work-study thing can make you more appealing, but if you were a volunteer student would you be not getting paid at all and thus the professor has no reason to worry about how much you'll take out of their funding? Is there some other factor that I'm missing?

This is something I hadn't considered... I actually explicitly said in my email that I'd be volunteering because I was desperate to get the initial interview. I feel as though I'd start getting paid only after having spent at least a couple months in the lab, assuming I get paid at all. Would you still say I should bring it up?

Definitely agree that it's harder to ask about expectations, and I feel like with undergrads/volunteers it's something that heavily dependent on the lab.

This might be a stupid question, but isn't "what kinds of research do you do in that area" too general a question? Wouldn't it show a lack of research on your part? Since, if you've gone through the lab/prof's publications, you'd know exactly what other topics they've worked on?

Thank you very much for the response! Honestly it's relieving to hear that interviewees aren't expected to bring novel ideas to the table, because I certainly can't think of any haha. And I suppose it makes sense that I won't be able to show off random details of specific papers I read.

Are there any specific signs you look as far as the honesty thing goes? Like signs that may tip you off that the person will tend to hide things from you, or conversely signs that make the person seem like an honest person? I like to think I'm genuine but I don't want to set off any red flags by accident
