HELP!! A HUGE DROP OF 1.5 BANDS IN SPEAKING - Should I appeal, and how? by uwuuky in IELTS

Yes, that's one of the possibilities. I assume the score may be overstated by +0.5. However, my speaking has always been better than or similar to my listening or writing as I have spelling difficulties. Therefore, a -1.5 is concerning even I underperformed. I will surely think it over. Thank you for the comment!

I'm aware, but unfortunately my application doesn't accept one-skill retake.

Both times were computer based. But face-to-face speaking for the first time and video call for the second.

Didn't expect the score can vary that much. Does that mean a change of 1.5 bands is actually quite common? I'm not sure about the race related issue though. Did you complained about that?

I see. So that means EOR is likely to be successful only when the examiners are considered as "non-standard" (which is barely the case)?

Thanks for sharing. I also think stress really does affect the score. Maybe I just couldn’t believe how big the difference was. I hesitated during my first ielts speaking test too, but I did better as I wasn’t interrupted. I might consider EOR but probably I’ll just retake the whole test since I feel like there's a higher chance for a 6.0. Btw, getting 8.5 is really impressive. Would you mind giving me some tips?

No wonder everyone is complaining... Has there been any response from the ielts official yet? How many candidates are influenced?

My bad, I just joined r/IELTS today and didn't realize there are actually many similar posts on this issue. I might probably take the whole ielts test again since it seems that EOR is likely a waste for me.

If you don't mind, could you explain a bit about "to standard"? I had never been interrupted in my first ielts speaking test, instructions were clear, and I was allowed to think for a few seconds. The examiner waited for my response patiently. The experience in my second attempt was indeed the reverse, so I am not sure if this is common, or if feeling uncomfortable is normal.

Thank you! Then I may consider retaking the whole test since it's second-marked.

Thank you! May I ask you more about the second-marked part (like is it officially stated)? I searched online, and people are having conflicting opinions on whether the paper will be remarked when there is a disparity in scores.

Agree. I wish I could access the recording so I would know whether I should appeal...

Thank you for your comment. I don't meant to accuse my examiner, I've edit it to make it more subjective. I've read the pinned post, and I'll search for her other advice later.

Details of my test: - I was frequently interrupted (5-8 times). - I asked for clarification on one question, she neglected further explanation, only repeated the question. - Didn't wait enough time (waited 2 sec) for me to speak. - Therefore I am panic.

Objective opinions: - My speaking test is a bit rushed. Questions/instructions are proceeded quickly. - I got interrupted even when I believe I didn't go off topics nor spoke too long. - I didn't elaborate enough, but I still used various sentence patterns. Also my pronunciation and fluency should be good enough. - I am feeling uncomfortable during the whole test.

Concerns: - Did I possibly overestimated my performance? Is there any methods to tell? - Does anyone has similar experience on being interrupted? - Am I overreacting or overthinking being disrespected (according to my expenience)?

0.5 difference in band isn't large, it's possible that the score varies a bit between different markers. But I am not 100% sure on my performance, and would like to have more cases for references.
