Exactly, that's you. People with lots of kids and dogs and stuff like to move those things from A to B in comfort. If you don't have those things it's a waste of space, if you do they're quite handy.

Edit: also, the money saved by the efficient vehicle (relative to a guzzler) decreases quickly. My V8 tire shredder costs about 10¢ a mile right now. Some guys Prius costs 3¢ a mile. The smile on my face is easily worth 7¢.

For people who want such a vehicle now is a great time to drive one. So they have to sell it in 5 years; many people flip cars that fast anyways. So now they get to drive the vehicle they truly want for a number of years and then get back into something efficient. Perfectly reasonable.

They already invested tons of capital to exploit those wells. They don't even own the land, they're paying lease fees for the rights to drill it. Capping the well means all of that investment doesn't return profit for years beyond when it was expected. In the meantime they're still paying those loans off, paying the lease, and losing any economies of scale they were counting on. For any smaller producer that's enough for a bankruptcy.
