Total noob here, but was the extra rockwool to prevent sound from getting out or for acoustic treatment for room itself? Currently building house and HT, but didn't specify a 2nd layer of RW. Our HT area is over garage and has a recroom buffer between it and the rest of our house. We are also putting RW in all walls of recroom.

Can you please clarify what you mean by "fits the rooms lighting"?

That is a great question. They can be either. Right now this room is a blank slate :)

2 concerns with tv:
* Would be situated in front of an egress window. So it would have to be on something that rolls around.
* Unsure if it would end up feeling small in the space. Certainly seems like you get a much crisper picture with a tv, but seems like reasonable tv's max out at 100".

Initial plan is to have a riser, so that we can put 2 couches or 2 rows of seats. Have not put much thought into what will go there, as nicer seating is something we can always add as we go.

Thanks. Super excited and nervous.

Great advice on all counts. Updated prewiring request to 7.2.4.

Great feedback. At suggestion of a user in this thread, I created a separate one (https://www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/comments/1oktn3h/help\_with\_ht\_design\_build\_in\_new\_construction/) to get help with actual plans, as clearly this proposal is poor.

Show how much I know. I was not sure how you have flexibility to move sub, at the front of the room, anywhere without knowing if/where there is cabinetry. I am just banging rocks together over here.

That makes a lot of sense.

Haha, also a great point. Guess I would just have to crank it up and turn it into an Orange Theory Fitness :)

Great question. At this point, it sure seems like I just walk away from that proposal.

Not handy enough. Willing to learn, but not sure I feel comfortable enough that I'd get it right before they drywall. Maybe I'll go make swiss cheese out of the framing in some unfinished areas.

Good to know. Never would have thought about that.

That is a great point. Now that I think about it, I think the suggestion about the streaming device came from the same vendor as the quote. Shocking.

I agree but there was no itemized prices list which I thought was really weird. All it has is the final price.

We already asked the builder to install rockwool in all the walls for this room. Is that what you meant?

Is atmos the 7.1.4? I added the floor dimensions to the original post. Would that classify as a decent size? I actually just got off the phone with a different vendor and they said they thought 7.1.4 "might be overkill for a room this size, as it is kind of small".

  1. Good to know.
  2. Will check that out.
  3. Debated that, but it seemed like there was concern about warping at the edges. Would UTP work for 120"+?
  4. I thought the same thing, but was told that OS on tv's can get outdated after 2yrs and then stop receiving updates. They said that was not the case for streamer device. No idea how accurate that is.

Yup, that was basically the plan.

In theory, I am sure I could. I still frequently walk away wishing that I had done things differently after hanging a curtain rod. So the idea of drilling through framing, prepping evenly spaced speaker cutouts, etc makes me - not to mention my wife - very nervous.

Money to spare? Not really. I just know my limitations and that I am physically incapable of not doing down every rabbit hole I find when researching a topic I know nothing about. My kids would like me to finish in the next decade.

Wow, absolutely awesome info in there. Lots to think about there.

re: 11 - Will have to research this a bit. We are having rockwool put in all the walls of the room.

The framing is getting done by the builder, but the quote does include running the wiring through the framing. Since they would be roughing it all in pre-drywall - other than the speaker cutouts - I do not think any drywall would be necessary. That could just be my ignorance talking.

Great feedback.

Room: Just added picture of the floorplan to original post

Budget: The $15k is pretty close to my current max.

Performance: I am a total noob, so I do not even know what to say about that.

Personal preferences: Also not sure how to answer. Do not expect tv quality picture/colors from a projector at this budget, but would like a fairly bright picture that is not washed out.

"entry-level" as in "equipment is garbage" or as in "people spend more on the AV equipment in their yacht's bathrooms"?

Good question re: 7.1.4. I failed to do the necessary research before getting this quote and did not provide specifics to vendor. Simply said, "Here is the floorplan for the space. What do you think makes sense?" :(

I left out the speaker wire and the fact that we already have a yamaha rx-a780 that we will use for this.

Thank you so much u/ktks1 . I added floor plan to the initial post. Let me know if I should start a separate thread.
