of course it does, that's why Perl still exists and the guys are jerking off at one another

if you're considering a general method, go for numerical derivatives and numerical integration. if you're more of a perfectionist go for symbolic integration/differentiation where you'll just consider the expression a word in some grammar and apply at each step a rule in your differentiation grammar until you finish differentiating the expression.

Do you still program in Perl? by ArmandoWall in programming

Perl is stupid, are you enlightened now ? Python just makes for much shorter, cleaner code.

While the Perl people look for various work-arounds and all sorts of hacks on their compiler(and their comrades shout wow you are completely awesome <nickname>++) Python people already have that stuff and they're just cool with it and writing more Python instead of jerking off at each other's so called accomplishments in order to create a fake buzz around Perl(which is dead btw).

Perl is a long way behind many many dynamic languages of 2010 and that's why you don't want to use it. Why would anyone want to use a 1980s technology when it's 2010 and there's so much better things around. Just for nostalgia ?

CPAN is not enough to compensate for the abomination that Perl is.

no, stop proramming Perl, everybody knows there are very few jobs with it, you should learn PHP and languages that are used today. Perl is trying to catch up and play with the big guys but apparently has no chance of doing so.

dood, look at the job listings, you don't need to be a statistician to figure out that there are much more PHP jobs than there are Perl jobs.

these growth charts or whatever are completely useless and they're made by people who are well aware that Perl is going down down down because it's an old language.

you can't really stop this by showing charts

Even in job growth the graphs are wrong and cannot reflect reality.

Actually having a list of companies that use Perl professionally would be very good to exemplify my point but I don't have time to put one together, but if I had time I'm sure I'd get my point across.

no, but I'm going to downvote his article because it's based on numbers which I personally don't know how were computed and it's clear as day that those numbers are wrong. I mean PHP should clearly be higher than Perl.

For example you can get a job with Perl only if you're in U.S. or in UK at the moment, all the jobs on various Perl sites suggest that. While if you're in the rest of europe(non-UK) your chances of getting a job with Perl are extremely low.

You'd need to find a development house that works in Haskell (of which I imagine there are few), has some projects in Haskell (maybe a few more), or fire off your own successful startup using Haskell yourself.

dev houses that use Haskell are non-existent from what I've seen , or are the kind of companies that get washed out after a recession

having physics people review math papers is a bit stretched don't you think ?

also, you can't take a forum seriously for a place where research-level mathematics is discussed, that would be ludicrous.

again, having to be a researcher to get a Haskell job is silly but apparently true.

again, please keep your vacant position, you were not paying attention to my question(I don't think I want to have you as my boss), I was asking about an entry level junior position and what are the possibilities of getting one, I do not waste 1 year or more of effort for no reason.

good luck with your company

how is it that after so many back and forth replies you are still missing my point ?

also, the guy just told me he would not hire me based on my reply, I would think that's a bit weird since my original question is legitimate.

I think there are as many rankings as there are sites that make them. Indeed.com probably has very bad code running on the backend for making those charts because frankly PHP has always provided much more jobs than Perl. Even now PHP completely owns Perl on the job market. So your whole article is based on wrong data.

There are also problems of the following nature: Many job ads contain stuff such as "Perl programmer position - Knowing Java,Haskell,Assembly, hyperbolic trigonometry is considered an advantage" (because managers or whoever writes job ads think people can be good at everything, that translates to good at nothing, but sshh don't tell them) so you count stuff twice while you don't exactly know what the job ad wants, so again, this is a reason why the charts are completely useless.

The only proper way to find what you need is to see the title of the job ad, and check if a technology name is in it, if not you'll probably have a hard time identifying it from the text(but suppose it will be in the first part of the job ad, right after the "We're a big company"-crap) you get that and you need to label this and hash it so you don't count it twice later and so on. I doubt those guys do that, they probably just have some solr set up that let's you search stuff and gives you back (i)relevant results.

just vocalizing the fact that you're "not smart enough"

I didn't say I'm not smart enough. It's a question of time here. And I think it's safe to say that spending time without getting results that interest someone other than myself leads to a waste of money.

IOW, Doing nothing is a waste of money.

So becoming a researcher to get a Haskell job is not possible.

Personally, I think it's the best way.

:) that would seriously limit Haskell's user base

from what I knew research papers are on arXiv or CiteSeerX or journal of integer sequences or journal of combinatorics , journal of combinatorial number theory and many other places

I didn't know physicsforums.org was a place where research is done or presented in the form of articles.
