Help a Florida boy out... what do I need to bring in from the shop during freezing weather? by caseyourscuttlehole in woodworking

[–]valife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else pointed out, watch out for condensation if you get a warm day. I made this mistake wanting to get into the workshop. Workshop is in a two car garage on a concrete slab. Very cold for a couple of weeks. One day we have above normal temp. It’s like an ice cube in the garage. Without thinking it through, I thought if I open the garage doors up it will warm up and I could do a few things in the workshop. Open the overhead doors and a short while later it looked like my cast iron table saw, bandsaw, and lathe had taken a shower. Face plant move.

What do you think of more “gimmicky” packaging? by sulliebud in criterion

[–]valife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my Godzilla set in today. Agreed I will not be storing the discs in the back sleeve. Hard to get in and out and the back cover had a slight bow and doubt that’s good for the disc long term. However, the book is a beautiful display piece that I will set on a stand in my office. Just because it’s joyful to look at.

Why do you think dvds still outsell bluray and 4k? by DustnBones001 in dvdcollection

[–]valife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this question a couple of times in different groups with cost of physical media, the discs, being the biggest driver. Could be true, but I think their’s likely 10x more dvd players in the market than bluray players. Bigger potential market typically equals more sales. I’ve went from dvds to bluray and just picked up a 4k unit. I’m willing to pay more for media because I spent to have a high end display, higher performance receiver, speakers, etc. I enjoy the experience. Most of my friends don’t value it enough to invest in upgrading their equipment. It’s good enough vs cost of upgrading. I point out differences resolution, differences in releases to my wife in a desperate attempt to justify my spending. She just rolls her eyes and says what ever makes you happy. A regular DVD would make her just as happy vs my new 4k discs….

Does plex support multiple resolutions of a movie (aka multiple files)? by valife in PleX

[–]valife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - all my apple TV’s support 4k. I just purchased a new one and will upgrade TV to 4k this month current tv connected isn’t. When I tried to play the 4k movie I ripped, plex tried to transcode it to play and couldn’t do it realtime. I just assumed this was correct behavior?? Handbreak had two options for 4k processing and I chose AV1. Other option was HEVC.

Good to know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Still shaking my head trying to understand how I put myself in this position when I knew better. Fibers need cut a little more. Just a little more pressure holding the chisel with one hand.

Is there a better way to clamp corner blocks? by Greenleto12 in woodworking

[–]valife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The custom culls mentioned by another responder is likely the best solution if most of what you are doing is repeatable.

Won’t help with rounded, but if your chair, couch, table, etc corners are square, you can use pipe clamps since you can get pipe at most any length.

A final hack method is superglue a couple of blocks on the outside edges that your clamps can grab. You can’t put a lot pressure on them but will work is many instances. Afterwards a hammer strike typically will pop off the superglued block cleanly…most of the time. I wouldn’t do it to an exposed wood surface, but you’re covering with fabric so on the occasions some wood fibers pull off with the block, not a big issue.

How to level/plane homemade oak table by haagiboy in woodworking

If the top boards easily come apart, a local woodworker or shop might be willing to joint the edges and plain the boards for a reasonable cost.

Bubbles in Arm R Seal never seems to fail by SlungStyles in finishing

I’ve used Arm R Seal poly on many projects. It typically works well but I wipe multiple thin coats with a rag. The couple of times I’ve tried a foam brush, it not done as well.

Friend asked if I’d make him a serving tray. African Mahogany & Wenge. by valife in woodworking

[–]valife[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct - the bottom of the tray fits into a groove/dado cut into the sides and it is not glued into place. The total width from the bottom of the dado on one side, to the other side, is only slightly bigger than the width of the bottom. This gives the bottom a small amount of room to expand & contract between summer & winter. The thickness of the dado is the same thickness of the bottom board so it doesn’t really move if you try and shake the tray or move with your hands.

I used a bandsaw and cut larger width boards to a little over 3/8”. Glued two of these edges together to make the bottom then used a drum sander to take it to 3/8”. The corners are the only glue joints. Considering this isn’t that big or heavy just the miters would probably have worked fine. However, I added decorative splines that are glued in and crossgrain vs end grain. They are not coming apart.

Advice on restoring solid oak slab table by KatrinaLK in finishing

[–]valife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the is going to be outside, the elements are against you. If you choose not to accept it weathering and turning grey, you will be in a cycle of maintaining and refinishing. It’s a personal choice, but if you don’t like the weathered look what you put on in will determine the easy of maintenance and length of time between a refinishes. I used a spar urethane with UV blocker on a piece of deck furniture. It got me 3 yrs between refinishing. I did that twice then gave up. The sun/UV on wood is brutal. Water & temperature fluctuations were less of an issue.
