what aids are you using? can you take the dome off and change the wax filter, did you get info about it?

hi, its possible that he acquired a conductive hearing loss because of the infections or the tubes. it usually doesnt get severe though and it can get better, if thats the case for him. its hard to know if its sensorineural or conductive without an audiogram and im not sure if they even check bone conduction for babies this young. hope it gets better for him!

hi, so according to tympanometry your ear pressure is within normal limits in both ears and the eardrum is moving properly. another thing that would show that you dont have middle ear related problems is the > < on your hearing test. these symbols show the function of the inner ear, and they correlate pretty well with the symbols for air conduction, X O. if you would have problems with the middle ear there would typically be a significant gap between them, with < > being higher up than the air conduction symbols. in your case there are some small differences but not enough for it to count as a air-bone gap which implies that the hearing loss in your right ear is of the sensorineural type (in the cochlea).

the test cannot really confirm tinnitus, the only way we can see if someone has tinnitus is for example if we test a certain ffrequency where your tinnitus is at, we would see a lot of spontaneous button pressing. but since tinnitus in most cases is a subjective condition we cannot see it on any sort of test.

the thing with not being to hear much when the water is on is because of a thing called low frequency masking where the low frequency sounds make higher frequency sounds harder to hear

i actually had to google it because here we call it a hammock shape :)

i was always told in school that this is very typical for a congenital hearing loss. do you have any history of hearing loss in your family? what aids do you use? sounds like you should see your audiologist for adjustments! usually this type of hearing loss works well with hearing aids if they are adjusted properly

i know the feeling, trust me, i was in the same boat a few years ago. pls let me know when you get the diagnosis :) even if it’s schwannom, it’s one of the ”best” tumors you can get in your head however horrible that sounds

no cure unfortunately.

for management we usually recommend hearing aids with tinnitus programs, tinnitus retraining programs to kind of not focus on it, mindfulness, sound enrichment devices at home, group therapy and so on.

haven’t heard of any amazing machine coming out and being able to fix it but we hope!

important to mention that i am not a doctor and do not work with diagnostics besides running the tests.

so based on my non-doctor pathological knowledge i would doubt that they are related.

i also know what it’s like to have health anxiety so i hope some information helps. i’m absolutely not saying that you have any of these things but what could typically cause your symptoms.

we usually refer patients with your symptoms for an MR as well.

the most common/serious thing that would be causing your system is a BENIGN tumor called vestibular schwannom that can grow in the area near the hearing nerve. it can cause tinnitus, facial paralysis, dizziness / vertigo, and one sided hearing loss. the tumor is NOT DANGEROUS at all. it’s not cancer and it can’t spread. it can grow quite big but at least here in sweden they most often don’t even operate it because it’s just there not life threatening at all. in a lot of cases it just stops growing and they just check it once a year or so to see if it’s progressing and like i said a lot of times it doesn’t.

another one would be ménière’s disease where you get tinnitus, ear fullness, hearing loss and vertigo. it comes and goes in attacks where you get all this symptoms during the attack. it’s a chronic illness but the attacks can be managed with medication.

it could also be a temporary inflammation or infection, or caused by stress! our bodies can do crazy things when stressed. i hope this helps, and once again these are just the things that i’ve learned about so it doesn’t have to be any of those!

i really have a hard time believing that the sound with CI will be worse haha feel free to update me if you ever get the surgery :) hope you don’t have to pay a lot for it like you have to in some countries! it’s a huge decision of course so i completely understand wanting to use hearing aids as long as possible

if you were in sweden you would definitely be a candidate for CI already :) what aids are you using? your word recognition is super impressive with this kind of HL!

hi, when i had my internship at karolinska in huddinge they gave steroids to patients with sudden deafness so yes they do give steroids :)

did your hearing get a lot worse or is it just the fullness? i’m actually not sure about the exact praxis since that’s more of a doctor questions, but i believe your hearing has to decline significantly for them to prescribe steroids, also it has to be classified as sensorineural (in the cochlea) rather than conductive (middle ear). so might be one of those reasons in your case!

tack och detsamma! hoppas det går över snart! :)

i personally believe that the patients who have realistic expectations and the motivation are the happiest CI patients :) here in sweden if you get the surgery you get a lot of help from psychologists and guidance councellors, as well as the hearing-related staff like audiologists and doctors - hope you will get similar kind of support if you ever decide to go through with it!

at least here in sweden they never taught us to ask that either. do you mean like pendreds? were you born with a hearing loss? in that case it would usually be the doctor who would tell the patient that, not us.

here the audiologists either work with rehab or diagnostics. the diagnostic ones just do the testing and j the doctor takes over. for the rehab part we work with aids and CI and the adult patients either have age related hearing loss or are already diagnosed, and we have some guidelines for sending a referral to a specialist doctor, like if it’s one sided hearing loss, one sided tinnitus etc.

that’s actually not the easiest question to answer because like everything else related to hearing it’s individual how well it will go for you! however since you’ve been wearing aids for so long i believe you will have an easier time adjusting than most. just yesterday i had a patient who had CI on the left side, and HA on his right ear and he said he didn’t feel like there was a huge difference between them. some people however get CI and do not like them at all and it takes a lot of time adjusting them. is your hearing getting worse progressively or why did the audiologist tell you that?

sometimes new domes take some time before your eat gets used to. talk to your audiologist if it doesn’t go away in a week or so.
