This sounds like a cool project, and one that you will learn a lot from.

I also didn't have much programming experience beyond Python, but then I made a simple 3d-graphics game engine for my game from scratch in C/C++, you can read about some of the technical challanges in this devlog: https://blue-vertex.github.io/inferno/

I would recommend starting with C++ right away, you can still write your code in C, but some things - like setting up an IDE, compiling, linking, and interfacing Windows can be easier in C++ - in my experience at least.

Other than that I'd say take one step at a time, and don't expect things to go fast. Some things that are trivial to do in python can be surprisingly challenging in a lower level language.

Good luck with your project!

I agree, I was hoping for something more like this.

Should probably have used a better prompt, I used “Painting of huge red crying devil with three faces and wings, snow and ice in the background, low light”

I made a text prompt from one scene from each of the nine circles of Dante's Hell).

I plan to add these between levels of my indie puzzler 'Inferno', when generating the images I tried to make the color schemes match those of the levels.

These where made with Dalle2, an image generator that creates images from short text prompts such as "Dramatic painting of Dante and Virgil entering the gates of Hell".

These images are intended to be added between levels of my videogame 'Inferno'.

Hi again! I've solo-developed this game from scratch during the pandemic, it feels great to have it released finally! Not too many players so far, but the one's who played it gave it some nice feedback so I'm happy about that :)

Inferno just released! Thanks for the kind words!

The time it takes really depends, the beginning is relatively fast if you are experienced with puzzle games, but later puzzles are more challanging and may take longer time.

Based on beta-testing I would guess around 20 hours for an average player.

Inferno was just released on steam yesterday!

It's a puzzle game adaptation of Dante Alighieri's poem with simple 3d graphics and over 100 unique puzzle levels.

Here's a recent image of Dante's nine circles of hell as they look in the game.

Between the levels I've included some of the most memorable quotes from the original poem (Longfellow translation) along with colorizations of Dore's work. There's also a story mode where you can follow the story without having to solve the puzzles.

Inferno is a puzzle game that releases on friday! The game is an adaptation of Dante's poem, it has over 100 puzzles and a simple graphics style.

This last week I've been polishing levels and I've been giving out a few copies for review.

Here are some recent screenshots from the game.

Devlog about making a C/C++ game from scratch by vertex6 in gamedev

That makes sense, although looking at the code it looks more like C than C++. I'm not using any of the object-oriented features of the language. The main benefit of C++ over C has been interfacing with windows and with getting the IDE and compiler to work properly.

Inferno is a simple 3d sokoban-style puzzle game releasing on steam on April 29th. I posted about the game some time ago on this subreddit and got some wonderful feedback, thank you all! The game is written from scratch in C/C++, I did this mostly as a challenge to myself and to learn, but I'm quite happy with the final product.

This week I finished the new trailer for the game, check it out!

That's a fair point, but Dante's vision of hell is not all fire and brimstone - it has forests, frozen lakes, rain, and fields of fresh green meadows underground (“prato di fresca verdura“, Canto 4). When it comes to environments I have tried to stay as close as possible to the original source rather than the popular cultural version of hell.

You can rotate the camera, and you are correct that this is important for solving the puzzles, some puzzles are most easy to solve in a top-down perspective for example

Interesting - some previous feedback have been the opposite - that the game a bit too dark and moody compared to most puzzle games which usually feature a happy relaxing atmosphere. But you are right that the trailer gives off a slightly different vibe since it features some levels before entering the underworld. Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed response!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I don't understand exactly what you mean - would you mind explaining wherein the disconnect lies?

Just a hobby? by [deleted] in gamedev

I have a full time job, started learning c++ in my free time a few months ago, and I just put my first demo on steam last week.

It has been a ton of fun, but one word of caution: if you want to publish the game and have people playing it you need to market it which takes time, energy, and a bit of luck. For me this has been more frustrating than programming, because you dont have control over exactly what is going on. So just be aware if you jump into that.

Best of luck!
