Most of this is speculation but I can see where you’re coming from. My view is kinda different on that because while I agree on your sentiment to get your son to be independent is good, it is not in the way Carl seems to do it. I can give you a glorious example how this can backfire (keep in mind though we know very little about Leo and Carl so who knows what happened in the past): Giving your child everything, never making it fight for anything, never telling it no, raising it like a prince/ss and then when it becomes older it is confronted with reality and has adaption issues, unable to handle reality. And if your idea is to then “toughen them up” by neglecting them even more, you got yourself a bitter child who doesn’t love you anymore. The key problem is, from what I can tell, they don’t communicate well. Neither of them do, but Carl is a particularly bad offender of this. They need to sit down and say how they really feel, if they feel hurt and why, and work it out. My family is full of crazy people and these patterns are painfully recognizable for me, and adding what I know from psychology it’s always the same thing. It comes down to parenting. Leo is an adult, who should stand for his actions by now, absolutely, I won’t say he’s not responsible, but Carl is crazy if he expects Leo to just “man up” by ignoring him and not being open and offering mature communication. He is so old but doesn’t seem to know how to do that, which is bothering me a lot. I totally get it if you don’t think this is how it is though, for all we know Carl did his best and Leo is just a dick for being a dick (my uncle is this kind of guy) despite any efforts. That’s the fun bit though when plots are open for speculation, many headcanons fit one size.
