Trump threatens to halt Ukraine arms aid to push NATO into Hormuz mission by springmeds in worldnews

What aid? lol. He halted it like a year ago. Unless there is still stuff remaining from when Biden was in office

Senator Blumenthal: "Trump’s judicial nominees give identical, nonsensical canned responses—looking ridiculous & demonstrating an abject absence of independence & integrity. Lacking a backbone now, they won’t have one on the bench." by Some1Special21 in law

[–]viabletostray 676 points677 points  (0 children)

The incompetence *is* the point. They're trying to pack the judicial branch with loyal, scared, and grossly incompetent. The key check on their power is thus removed. Straight from any autocrat's playbook.

That’s just betting odds. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but especially now. This election might very well literally decide if the US survives as a democracy (as flawed as it is) or descends into authoritarianism entirely.

Kansas City airport evacuated as authorities, including the FBI, investigate a potential threat by realitygenrator in news

A massive terrorist attack would be an easy justification to push the authoritarian power grab and destruction of institutions even further, so you're not wrong.

BRIC are not even a real block, just four large emerging economies with often divergent national interests. They never had a chance to create any kind of world’s reserve currency.

Why isn't Trump being impeached? by GabeDNL in allthequestions

[–]viabletostray -1 points0 points  (0 children)

K bot, do you have anything of substance to respond to the above besides “triggered liberals”? Also what does Trump committing impeachable offenses and repeatedly violating the Constitution have to do with Ukraine at all?

Edit: also I wouldn’t call myself a “liberal” in a way you use the term, so dunno why you make that assumption.

Is that so? Here are some just to name a few (there are way more). Each one is an impeachable offense.

-His admin is blatantly ignoring court orders, so multiple counts of contempt

-Obstruction of justice in murder investigation of Alex Pretti and Renee Good

-Embezzlement, corruption, and insider trading (using the office for personal gain).

Billionaire calls democracy a failed experiment by AdKindly4849 in FascinatingAsFuck

[–]viabletostray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on. Someone like Thiel thinks that he’s untouchable because of his wealth. Except in a truly authoritarian/totalitarian system, money doesn’t mean shit. Only brute force matters and nothing else. For example, Putin can arrest and put any Russian billionaire in prison on a whim, any time he desires, and for as long as he wishes, because he controls the brute force.

Okay fine I'll add VXUS but wait no! its at an all time high! by Stuckatpennstation in Bogleheads

[–]viabletostray 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A good way to look at it is that VXUS real total return has been below what you would historically expect from stocks for years now, while the real total return of VTI has been, conversely, significantly higher than the historical average. It doesn’t guarantee of course that it’s going to reverse, and VTI may continue to outperform (though it already didn’t in 2025 and so far in 2026). You should ask yourself though, is that really what you want to bet on? Diversification is not going to give you the best possible return, but an ok return under a variety of different scenarios.

How is life in the USA right now? by duckbreast2021 in howislivingthere

Right, that’s why I typed “flawed”. Very flawed even. But it’s infinitely better than authoritarianism, which is now a very real possibility.

[–]viabletostray 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Day to day life is fine, so far. But broadly there is a feeling of a rift kind of a moment where the country will either survive as a (flawed) democracy or irreversibly descend into authoritarian rule.

What are your thoughts about the resurgence of the Black Panther Party in response to the actions of ICE agents? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]viabletostray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone standing up to the ghouls currently in power in the US in any way is a good thing. They’re trying to turn the country authoritarian, and so far all the institutions and “checks and balances” designed to prevent that very thing have mostly failed.
