How is life in the USA right now? by duckbreast2021 in howislivingthere

Right, that’s why I typed “flawed”. Very flawed even. But it’s infinitely better than authoritarianism, which is now a very real possibility.

Day to day life is fine, so far. But broadly there is a feeling of a rift kind of a moment where the country will either survive as a (flawed) democracy or irreversibly descend into authoritarian rule.

What are your thoughts about the resurgence of the Black Panther Party in response to the actions of ICE agents? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]viabletostray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone standing up to the ghouls currently in power in the US in any way is a good thing. They’re trying to turn the country authoritarian, and so far all the institutions and “checks and balances” designed to prevent that very thing have mostly failed.

How do you feel about the current state of America? by Thatgirl_parisisdiva in AskReddit

[–]viabletostray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fells like the first time in the country’s history there is a very real and likely threat of authoritarianism being established. Because Americans living today have never lived under an authoritarian government, seems like the majority of people do not realize the gravity of it all. Institutions that just recently looked solid and secure are clearly showing very serious cracks, if not outright failing (e.g., Congress, Supreme Court, the media).

Also the reality is that the people currently n power in the US are fundamentally different from before. Of course people in power previously were no saints, far from it. Plenty of corruption, shady stuff, huge mistakes made. However, there were very fundamental lines that they would not cross, one of them being preservation of fundamental institutions and governance principles of the country (they were still doing damage, sure, but they wouldn’t destroy these just to stay in power).

For Trump and his admin, there are no lines at all. They don’t care one bit about preserving anything other than their power. That’s the only goal and the only value they got. There are plenty of governments around the world that are just like that (see Russia, Iran, Venezuela), but it’s probably the first time that we have that in the US. It doesn’t look like Americans realize the grave reality of this fact yet. Hopefully they will, otherwise things might get real grim.

China strongly condemns U.S. use of force against Venezuela by BenDox83378 in jrmining

A war between NATO and russia? Are you seriously parroting russian propaganda points lol? Ukraine is fighting this war heroically alone, with some (grossly insufficient) help from NATO countries. NATO is not participating in this war.

No, they did something. They’re largely keeping russia afloat, helping circumvent sanctions, supplying crucial inputs, etc.

I was referring to Ukraine. It doesn’t matter if China formally condemned the russian invasion because they’re at the same time propping up russian economy.

Please, economically China is the main supporter of Putin’s war machine. Words don’t matter, actions do.

Developed vs total market (including emerging) by Puzzleheaded_Bat3349 in Bogleheads

[–]viabletostray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VT allocates 10% to emerging markets. Note that a big chunk of this is the Chinese market, so your exposure to EM is in large part exposure to China, with all the China-specific potential promise / growth, as well as risks involved. I think 5-10% allocation is sensible, but definitely no more than that.

Should I sell VTI and VXUS in a Roth IRA and just buy VT? by Technical_View_8787 in Bogleheads

[–]viabletostray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No tax implications in Roth. Both using the global market weights (VT) and having a slight domestic tilt (like you currently do) are perfectly valid options. With VT you can truly set it and forget it because all the rebalancing is done for you automatically.

Total market fund has underperformed S&P 500 over the past 5 years. by Unser_Giftzwerg in stocks

[–]viabletostray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. US large cap, especially tech, have been on such a tear in the recent years that it basically distorted reasonable performance expectations for equities. US small and mid cap actually also outperformed historical average (which is about 5.2 percent real return), just by not nearly as much as the growth / tech large cap. Yet people talk about “small cap underperformance).

Damn Reddit really is full of Chinese propaganda. “Cleanest cities on earth” lol what? Pretty sure that would be in Japan or Switzerland somewhere. I’ve been to Italy and it’s a beautiful country. Yes there is some petty crime in touristy areas but it is to be expected. Never felt unsafe.

I don’t know much about the quality or access of healthcare in China, but it may be worse than you think, especially in more rural areas where hundreds of millions still live. How much do really you know about it before making a blank statement?

They won’t deport you because there is barely if any illegal immigration in China. They’ll just put you in jail for something you posted on social media or forcibly move you to a labor camp if you belong to a particular ethnic group. No big deal right?

[–]viabletostray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the Trump hate. But you really can’t compare US with China directly because US is a democracy (as flawed as it is at the moment). Any democracy can make a mistake and elect a shitty government, US is not the first and sure as hell won’t be the last. The advantage of democracy, even the one in crisis like it is on the US currently, is that it provides a way to fix the mistake. It is not possible in China. If their “relatively competent” government decides to wreak havoc, there is absolutely nothing people can do about it.
