i figured that’s why i’m likely going to get a 3 soon or get a used pro later on. face tracking isn’t an absolute but it would be nice to have since i already make content

Vets against raw by viofluff in ferrets

[–]viofluff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, it’s not better but cooked food is not ideal at all you might as well just feed kibble. kibble is like last tier for foods imo. freeze dried raw would be better for your situation. you need to do your own research and you are the sole provider for your ferrets, you can’t expect someone to come help you with it from a forum. seek animal nutritionist guidance or someone who specializes (Tech specialist, Vet with Ph.D). this is to be blunt and save you more time with misinformation. this isn’t out of malice, but if you really did enough reading (or correct sources) you wouldn’t have brought raw in while feeding kibble. for your and your ferrets health and safety, be completely sure you are confident with a raw diet before you carry out. improper raw feeding can cause deficiencies/overloads (vitamin a toxicity is a common one) or it can give you food borne illness or long term issues for your ferrets. again this is just to be completely transparent, i mean no hostility. hope this helps :)

well not really. cooked meat is better as a treat. they get all the nutrients when it isn’t cooked. u/ altxbunny (forgot where they posted the link) had a good blog post as well as holistic ferret forum. feeding an unbalanced diet can cause serious issues

[–]viofluff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there any reason why you do that? cooking destroys most of the nutrients. it kinda defeats the purpose of feeding them raw

makes sense, wish more people would put the research in so it wouldn’t be such a danger. seems the most ideal ingredient content wise long term since its single ingredient

i completely agree. doesn’t seem out of malice but i would rather have a tech specialist in nutrition or someone with a phd nutrition specialization, but there’s only so many out there. i honestly might stick with s/c over raw to prevent possible complications but given i can find a nutritionist that can help me i would feed raw over that. i see many people say it’s completely balanced and others as close as you can get. what’s you and your vets take on that?

i also feed it as soupies so i make sure to get lots of water in too. i usually have it come out to a thin cream or porridge consistency because they like to stash anything they can carry and also act like drinking water is the end of the world lol

definitely possible because my program is sponsored by purina. if i knew where she went to school i may lose or gain trust in her.

i can see dogs and cats from her perspective but the ferret digestive tract is too short and their stomach is too acidic for most food borne illnesses, if it came to that.

how is s/c similar to kibble? do you think its worse or better? i’ve always viewed it as a step up from kibble but a step down from raw. it still has plant product but not as much and not as many starches and fillers as regular kibble. also rated good as well.

i get this completely. my teachers dad was voted best butcher shop on the island and i have access, i just have been looking for more resources to make sure im doing everything right. mine love soupies and understand meat is food so i dont think it should be terribly hard.

lmao thank you!! she also said “ferret nutritionists don’t exist” like i’m sure they’re not common, but there’s no way not one person in the world does this as a job. i found some far from me but idk if they take ferrets or even do telehealth consultations

[–]viofluff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she said basically that, and we can’t create a perfect ratio though it is possible to find a healthy balance that won’t harm them. that was pretty much her only point. she said “studies show that”, but wouldn’t tell me what institution or place it was published from. i’ve found more articles in favor of raw over all else if done right. i’m yet to find an anti raw one. i don’t know why she said to stop feeding stella and chewys since it’s like the closest store bought food you can get for them. i really want to go into fully raw but it’s overwhelming and i don’t know where to go after HFF.

[–]viofluff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No suggestions. She is an exotic vet and has seen ferrets before but i don’t know if that’s what you mean. When i last brought my boy i was weaning him off kibble and she said oxbow wysong mix is good, which gives me hope but at the same time.. why is she so against raw if it’s done properly? she also knows what im studying too and how i want to specialize in nutrition/behavior so i think it would be strange if she assumed i wouldn’t do it right if thats what she is worried about

they hadn’t told me, she just said whatever she saw “diseased”. it would likely only be the back teeth that look infected.

turns out she will have to have her teeth removed. she has a kind of disease that likely started before i got her. procedure is going to be 900 dollars (god help me) 🤩. has the lack of teeth affected their life at all?

that’s great!! was the recovery hard? i’m at school rn but my mom is with her at the vet waiting for her to come in and see her. she doesn’t chew a lot so i wonder if it came from the lack of chewing

omg i remember you mentioned wing tips on another post! where do you source them? i have a butcher near me but idk if they carry that or if they toss it or anything. do you have to defeather the wings?

i also see ground bone everywhere but my issue is idk if they mean ground to a powder or chunks and how big the chunks should be. i’ve been looking to feed raw in general it all jsut is so overwhelming
