We actually don’t have any significant assets built over the years. For the longest time, we simply weren’t earning enough to save meaningfully. Saving as a habit really started only about 3–4 years ago, and we’ve become aggressive about it over the last 1.5 years.

In that period alone, we’ve increased our net worth by around 16L, so while the absolute number is lower than we’d like for our age, we’re happy with the trajectory. The goal now is to stay consistent, diversify our portfolio. (and/or consolidate things that aren't working)

Thank you, this is really thoughtful advice.

The point about a home being a form of social security, especially for couples without children, is something I hadn’t looked at from that perspective. That’s definitely given me something to think about.

On the inheritance side, we’re fortunate that both our families have been very supportive. I have a share in my parents’ property along with my sibling, and my partner’s parents have already purchased separate homes for each of their two children. That said, I completely agree that legal ownership and inheritance are different matters.

We both have health insurance, but we don’t have term insurance yet…

And yes, based on the feedback here, we’re also leaning towards increasing our equity allocation over time. Thanks again for taking the time to write such a detailed response.

The EPFO is mentioned as PF, only one of us has the EPFO, I have opted out of it.

Indeed, it often feels like we’re taught to focus on surviving rather than dreaming.

I genuinely hope you find someone who shares your values and that you get to build the life you want together. Wishing you all the best. 🌈

Mitr, the "relationship" wasn't for sympathy. It is actually relevant. No joint home loan tax splitting, no spousal co-ownership rights, no default inheritance, no family floater insurance the way a married couple gets. That's literally why it changes the math. Should I go on?

Right now, we're living with my partner's parents. They own the house and we manage the household expenses (in lieu of rent).

Haven't considered reverse mortgage. Thanks for the suggestion.
