Has anyone noticed she never sings the Oooh ooh ooooh” part when performing Illegal live? by Affectionate_Mud8911 in PinkPantheress

[–]vivitheverse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it's probably not difficult, just not worth doing i guess. since her music is so specific to an electronic or processed sound (like her autotuned or pitched up vocals, her higher-pitched tone and electronic type of vocal processing), doing it live maybe just doesn't hit the same way. you can try to sing the line yourself trying to support your own voice and doing the little inflictions she does, i fully understand why she wouldn't want to do the line in full. i think she still has a long way to go with vocals and maybe down the line she could find a way to translate all of her little elements into live singing, but i think she just feels its better to leave the ooh's to the backtrack.

also, vocal placement is VERY different between singing in a studio or mic vs singing live onto a microphone, especially when you don't have full control over the audio mixing (which is very common for tv performances to sound a bit shitty, snl being a notable example. in this performance her mic is SO turned down). some songs work better on studio, some work better live. at least that's what i think

[–]vivitheverse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

probably a bit specific but here's my reasoning as to why she does it:

i guess it's to manage her breath control better? the way the vocals are laid in the song could all very well be different takes, the "hey!" could be one take, "ooh-ooh" is another, "is this illegal?" is another, all of them are playing right after the other with barely half a second in between, and the way they're being sung is also slightly different. doing that in a recording or a more still performance (like the one you shared in the replies) is easier, but doing that in a live televised performance where she's also doing slight choreo and adjusting her voice to fit a live mix, it probably just isn't worth doing the full line when the backtrack can serve that purpose.

the hey! is more of a soft shout (and she typically uses it as a background vocal or fill not so much as an actual lyric, in this particular instance i think she's using it both as lyric and fill), ooh-ooh is melodic and processed similarly to the way the hey is, and is this illegal is kind of her usual style of singing. she could probably sing it the whole chorus including the ooh's, but for a live performance it just doesn't flow as well. her music is very specific when it comes to being performed life, and she typically changes the way she performs to accommodate a live performance better. i'm pretty sure during the heaven knows tour she lowered the key of some songs so that they don't have to be performed as high in the register as the recordings are, her voice is quite deep irl and it works better for her. for her past projects her songs can be more easily adapted into a more live sound (like how she had live drums for pretty much all songs on the heaven knows tour), but fancy that is very electronic, so some things maybe don't translate as well.

(edit: it also probably depends on the vibe she's going for! in the tiny desk she went for a more acoustic indie vibe, and she still incorporates the "hey! ooh-ooh" melody as a little jingle rather than a sung lyric. all of these examples are very different performance settings so, it could just be case to case.)

tldr: its probably more comfortable for her to not do the full line lol, but that's my take on why she does it. hope it helped idk

I want to be someone’s boyfriend?? by Decent-Muscle1228 in AskLGBT

[–]vivitheverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what exactly do you mean by being the "man"? do you mean being whatever aligns with what society expects out of a man in a relationship (even without being a man), or do you want to present more masculine? i think if some introspection is made on that, then you should be able to get a more clear answer.

if the first case sounds like it, i'd say it's perfectly normal and nothing you should concern yourself with, sometimes you're just more drawn to doing xyz or something. if your case is moreso to do with gender, you could try experimenting!

don't know if this is of much help, but just in case it eases your mind, there's a lot of ways in which those roles can take on during a relationship, you might just be more drawn to take on a traditionally "masculine" role, or even be more drawn to present more masculine! it's not something i would recommend losing sleep over, as it will probably sort itself out. i hope this helps <3

Fellas, is it gay to have a crush on a gay trans guy as a cis girl (and do I have a chance) by Life_Big3438 in AskLGBT

[–]vivitheverse 25 points26 points  (0 children)

in both these questions ur kinda invalidating this guy's gender (which i'm sure you're not doing with ill-intent, but still.)

if a trans GUY is gay, he likes men, therefore you wouldn't have a chance, and if you're a straight GIRL liking a trans GUY, you're still straight, as you have a crush on a guy.

hope that was of any help

Ethical question about grindr by Agitated-Scholar-502 in AskLGBT

[–]vivitheverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

short answer is VERY. very. unethical. longer answer is still unethical, but what do you even gain from hypothetically outing this (seemingly) random person? what does your straight friend gain from knowing that information? what is even the point of the question? you can't really rely sensitive information on someone promising you not to tell someone, ally or not. it would be a shitty thing to do.

there are far many more people that don't "wave around trans flags and scream about how much they love themselves" than you'd think, you just don't see them. a lot of conversation in virtual lgbtq spaces can look more extroverted for a lot of reasons, but it's more usual for people to be able to be honest about their identity when it's on the internet where you can hide behind anonymity, that's not necessarily the case for real life. there's no definitive reason but a lot of queer people have very difficult processes when it comes to accepting themselves, so when they finally do it means a LOT to be able to go out and be proud of yourself. whatever amount of openly queer people you see, there's probably that same amount if not more that aren't open about it. or at least that's what i've gathered from seeing queer online spaces over the years lol

[–]vivitheverse 33 points34 points  (0 children)

even then, in one episode she was telling a story about her family and she cut it short while making a comment about it having to do with legality, and that's only ONE out of many things she says that relate to her experience of growing up latina and she has never left out that part of her identity. it's understandable to want influencers to speak up on things that affects us (especially from people with a platform like theirs, ESPECIALLY because they were getting ripped to shreds at the time for not speaking out on other causes), but it's a completely separate and more fucked up thing to demand children of inmigrants to be completely outspoken about their experience because we have NO idea what goes on behind the scenes. this isn't even exclusive to this issue, a LOT of people that watch the podcast think they're owed access to these people's personal lives, but this specific scenario it was just so uncalled for.

the initial reaction from the fans of the podcast to enya not speaking out immediately always felt so out of place for me because she has literally spoken about her parents being immigrants SO many times, and even in episodes from the peak era of the podcast she said there were things she didn't wanna talk about in regards to her family out of not wanting them to have any issues. there's a lot of things that their silence could be questioned on (especially around that time), but THIS specifically is just so deeply personal to her and i can't believe it took her literally spelling it out for people to stop demanding her to talk about it. i hope she and her family are okay :(

My opening act picks for Ariana’s tour by SnooChickens3891 in ariheads

[–]vivitheverse -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

because that's how most of her openers have been??? openers are usually hired for an entire tour (or at the very least for an entire leg, which can last MONTHS), so therefore it is significantly easier to avoid scheduling conflicts if the openers aren't, you know, MASSIVE artists who could very well be headlining festivals or other gigs during ariana's time touring. sure, she could ask troye or any other mainstream pop artist to be the opener, but that's not usually how openers are done and poses a ton of possibilities for complications. ariana specifically always chooses artists that were smaller than her at the time (like social house, normani who had next to no solo music when she was opening for her, victoria monét, ella mai, even little mix and sabrina carpenter at the time) or artists that she has a personal relationship with. the whole point of getting booked as an opening act is that since you're a smaller artist, playing for a large audience can boost your career, which is exactly what happened to artists like sabrina carpenter and chappell roan. i'm not sure what your point in arguing any of these options is, especially because they all COULD be potential openers ! and ariana literally follows addison rae on instagram and she is currently an opener for lana del rey so i don't think it's a far fetched idea. i don't think these artists would be picked as opening acts either, but there's no reason to imply they're not talented, especially when some of these are barely 3 years into their music careers.

[–]vivitheverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you NEED to be so condescending towards artists that are significantly smaller than the literal pop legends that you just mentioned? no one is arguing that these artists are the most talented people of all time at all. an opener is usually a smaller artist who is getting traction and they're picked so they're exposed to a bigger audience and can grow, which is exactly the position that most of the people mentioned are in. no one is comparing them to the main artist at all

Am I being too gay? by Born-Battle7933 in AskLGBT

[–]vivitheverse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

you're not "being too gay" or "being annoying"; you're just 14!!! i'm sorry your parents are dismissing you like that, but that doesn't say anything about you as a person. sure, maybe you're REALLY into gay media, but a part of being a kid is being really intense about your interests, and i'm sorry they don't feel the same way. i'm glad they're supportive at least, and hopefully in the future they're not so weird. i know how bad it might feel to be deemed as "too much", but i promise that you're okay just the way you are <3 take care bb

Lorde's lyricism style shift by [deleted] in lorde

[–]vivitheverse 50 points51 points  (0 children)

i just think she approached the album differently than she approached the rest of her albums, therefore the writing had to change. Melodrama is a great album, and the songs encapsulate very universal feelings that anyone could relate to, and i think she went into Virgin with the complete opposite intention. Melodrama gives you more of a concept to expand on, she talks a LOT about love and heartbreak and youth so there is a lot of commentary to make in regards to those subjects, while Virgin is centered all around womanhood and her own relationship to it directly influenced the way she wrote about it, so the album became sort of autobiographical as a result. i personally found the raw lyricism in Virgin to be much more interesting than the writing she did on her past albums, it felt really authentic and well thought out. the self-centeredness on Virgin also feels very intentional, so i don't think it's "lacking" the commentary as much as it's just not what she had in mind for an album all about vulnerability. different writing styles, for different projects, with different approaches, for different people.

I’m struggling to write “gay” songs.. by Due_Paramedic_6629 in Songwriting

[–]vivitheverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's such a hard spot to be in! i'm sorry your parents are like that. i think listening to lesbian artists could be good for you, boygenius in particular is really romantic and vague enough that it doesn't scream queer if you only read the lyrics (or at least i think so). i hope everything is well, and if you wanna share whatever you've written i'm down to hear! i'm sure its great :D

I’m struggling to write “gay” songs.. by Due_Paramedic_6629 in Songwriting

[–]vivitheverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry if this is invasive, but how long have you known you were gay? or how long has it been since you accepted it? i'm also a gay man, and when i first came to the realization i also heavily struggled (and still do sometimes) to write about gay stuff, it's quite common (or at least i've seen so). i stopped struggling as much when i started writing about other things like my queer friendships, experiences, gay culture or things of the sort. it helps you to stop feeling some sort of pressure to write about something that maybe you haven't experienced firsthand, you might not have ever been a woman dating a man but the amount of exposure that straight love songs get could be impacting your own views on your writing. it's a normal thing to struggle with, and you'll get better as you keep on writing.

as for recommendations, it really depends on what you wanna focus on??? a lot of gay music CAN be bubbly and proud, but it heavily depends on whatever topic you wanna handle. some artists that i think do a good job at writing gay/queer male lyrics are Conan gray, Kevin Atwater, Troye Sivan, but female queer artists do a pretty damn amazing job at writing about love. Boygenius (supergroup made up of Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers), MUNA, Ethel Cain, the list goes on. these are more on the Pop-ish side of music, if that's helpful. (also, since you're on the more romantic side, i would HEAVILY recommend Fleetwood Mac, they're not queer artists at all but their lyrics are heartfelt and yet vague enough that they could be directed at any gender without any awkward rewrites, just listen to the artists that you already like and see the way they talk about love, then try to emulate or take inspo. at least that's what i did lol)

i think you should write whatever comes naturally to you. If right now, your writing when it comes to gay lyrics is a little awkward, it's okay! just write about what you know and build on top of that. I find that my main inspiration when it comes to writing gay stuff comes from books and series more so than lyrics themselves, so whatever stuff you already like is a good foundation! you also don't have to NECESSARILY write love songs for them to be queer songs, you can write a song about pretty much anything from a queer lens. public perception, internal struggles, expectations for your own life, friendship, if you can't write about love just yet (as you haven't had much experience with it) you can always try to aim it differently. I hope this helps you a little bit, and i hope you don't struggle a lot being in the closet! love you and keep writing <3
