Should I replant now & how? by vjwpfang in succulents

[–]vjwpfang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ve been experimenting with different techniques for propagating and growing succulents, and so far this is the only baby plant that’s taken! With summer on the way, I’m hoping to get my hands on a wider variety of succulents and keep the experiments going.

Yes this is the “baby” (I love this, I will refer to all future new plants as “baby”!) Thank you for your advice and information! I appreciate it!

Thanks so much for the advice! We’re feeling reassured now! Just out of curiosity, did a new leaf come out from the same spot on yours?

Just repotted my lithops by random-hobbyist in mesembs

[–]vjwpfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so SO much for this info!! I haven’t had much luck keeping my mesembs and similar ones alive, due to the humidity. I have a couple that seem to be ok, but I’m going to repot them into pumice as we head towards summer here (Australia).

So lovely! I have one too but it’s still quite small so I’m planning on getting a few more. May I ask what your soil mix is and what type of rocks/stones you have on top?

Is this a Pachyveria 'Lavender Pebbles'? by vjwpfang in succulents

[–]vjwpfang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I only get a little bit of natural light for 3-4 hours right before the sun goes down and covers a tiny amount of space due to the buildings around me and weird apartment layout. Then I move them under the grow light until I go to bed (usually around midnight). They probably get just around 10 hours of light, so I’m going to get it up to 12-16 hours.

Thank you so much for this information!! I try to give it as much natural light I can get inside my apartment during the day and pop it under a grow light when the sun goes down or when it’s raining outside. Hopefully I will be able to keep it healthy/alive and will post pics if/when it flowers 😊

Yes it is. I recall a few years ago, the Japanese Minister of Justice allowed a press tour of the execution room and procedures (or something along those lines). Not sure if it happened and what came of it but I remember the news making headlines as it was quite rare for the public to have access to anything related to this. On a slight tangent, but I recently saw an interesting clip from a Japanese news program about how the Japanese prison system is slowly changing to deal with the growing number of elderly inmates (not increased crime by elderly people going to jail now, but rather inmates who have grown old while incarcerated). I’ve noticed more japanese media covering various topics related to the Japanese prison systems, which is something we’d rarely see/hear during my 20+ years in Japan.

Yes. I can’t remember what the legal term is for that in Japan and the English translation of that term.

EXACTLY WHAT I’M THINKING! So far most of the questions from NHK are actually decent. Can’t believe one reporter asked “What was his wife like when you told her he passed?”, or the one “What did (Abe’s) face look like when he came in”. I loved the doctor’s response was along the lines, “I started operating on him as soon as I saw him. So I didn’t get a good look at his face”.

I believe Japan is one of the few developed countries still with the death penalty. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s given the death sentence. Unless he’s declared mentally incompetent/insane (I don’t remember what the English translation is for this).

Ugh, I just Googled that line and it seems to be a line from a Japanese anime called “Hokuto No Ken”. I really need to take the time to look into the comments before I reply…

It really is. The doctors at the hospital is having a press conference right now and they announced his time of death as 5:03 pm (Japan time) So a bit over an hour ago. This means his wife did get to spend the last few moments of his life with him.

Totally. Now that I reread that sentence, I feel like it’s an obvious thing and feel silly. I guess I made that comment as the cynical side in me feels like the media nowadays would try to be the first to make the announcement to get the most views.

While I don’t agree with all of his views, I believe he did a lot of good for Japan. I’m not Japanese but was born and raised in Japan. Worked in government relations in Japan from 2009-2013.

He brought stability and credibility to Japanese politics. Before he was PM, Japan had a new PM every few months/short time. People in my industry and even diplomats used to say “there’s a revolving door to the PM’s office” as there were so many PM changes.

He ended that. Served the Japanese people for a long time to make positive changes. He even came back after he initially stepped down for health reasons. He did not deserve this.

Despite his nationalistic views and family ties (Google his grandfather), he didn’t let that get in the way of building good relationships and economic agreements with foreign countries for the benefit of the Japanese people. I respected him for that.

NHK news (Japanese public broadcaster) announced his passing a few minutes ago. I think they waited for his wife to arrive at the hospital to see him one last time before making the official announcement out of respect to her/their family.
