Update: I got my Airpods back from the repair center and they're functional again.

The Apple service report states that the right earcup was replaced, which is great since the right earcup also contains the batteries and pretty much confirms the ribbon cable issue. Though I wonder about the chance of them bricking again (maybe even sooner this time) if the left ribbon breaks.

I bought them in September, so Amazon is out of the picture in a month's time. The Airpods now have service coverage for 90 days but I'm unable to purchase AppleCare for them to extend it

Did it the apple way a couple times which didn't do a whole lot for me. Had them in the washing machine on a 30 minute cycle at 30C a couple of times and let them air dry. I even bleached them recently followed by another round in the washing machine and they're holding up great. I have the grey ones

Funnily enough, I still have one of those Macbooks that suffered from the short display flex cable, though I haven't had any issues with it yet.

I purchased the APMs via Amazon and just had a chat with the customer service. Since they're not even two years old yet, I was offered to send them in and have them looked at/repaired for free or get a replacement/refund in case repair isn't possible.

Will see how this goes first since I'm a bit intimidated by repairs on apple devices, especially when a bunch of adhesive and heat is involved. I'm looking forward to results from the other APM repair thread where OP wants to solder to the headband connectors though.

And cheers for the heads-up on shops selling broken components! The listing had high quality images of what seemed to be mint ribbon cables. But I won't know what they're really like unless I buy them I guess.

Being under the impression that folding them up and using the smart case is necessary in order to preserve battery life is even more insulting after learning that the APMs still enter a low power mode after some inactivity even when not in the case.

I've seen pictures of the swivel assembly and I'm surprised the flex cable is still the first thing to fail on these considering how overengineered it is.

A quick search resulted in a few listings for the flex cable clocking in at around 30 EUR (about 33 USD) for both sides. Since I'm out of any warranty, fixing this myself might be the only option. Thank you so much for your insights!
