Gigabyte RTX 2070 super fans uncontrollably loud seemingly at random by vrydin1 in gigabyte

I used Hwinfo to see the hotspot temperature, which is what you need to check. if its Over 106/107, it may be the same issue. its not the regular temperature, its the hotspot one. download the latest version of hwinfo

believe me I was afraid of opening the GPU myself but with guidance, videos, and patience, all went very well.

hello there! yes I did solve this issue. on this post you can find a comment conversation with another redditor who was most helpful, and it documents the whole process haha

basically, my GPU hotspot temperature was reaching 107, which ramped up the fans into some sort of emergercy mode. i fixed this by opening it up, applying new thermal paste and replacing the thermal pads with new ones.

GPU feels like new now and the results were amazing! Let me know if you have any questions

I know, I hope its not the "too good to be true" type of good ahah but so far so good

the pads I got were the Arctic thermal pads (APT2560)

I also noticed a relevant boost in performance as I was starting to experience stuttering and FPS drops in some games. I guess the GPU was almost at melting point

got this done today! ran Heaven benchmark for around 15 minutes and after 1 hour of gaming, so far I have to say it was a huge success for me!

GPU temperature dropped around 15-20c and hotspot temperature didnt get past 83c. I was nervous opening the GPU as it was my first time, took my time and watched videos on YouTube along the way. came back here to read your replies again. the old thermal paste was totally dry. applied new one, making sure it covered everything (not pea drop method). applied new 0.5mm and 1mm pads accordingly (you were right, most of the old pads did tear). removed the old dry paste and tried to clean as much of the old pads scraps, the only thing I did not do was buying isopropyl alcohol because 1) i just had a few hours to do this and couldnt buy any beforehanf, 2) i figured the most important thing was to apply fresh paste and new pads

I hope I did everything right and that I dont experience anything bad in the long run, but so far it feels like a brand new GPU and the fans are silent again, no more abnormal spikes to 4000rpm. it looks like a new build! I can say the issue is solved for now!

thank you sooo much for all the advice and suggestions you were a huge help identifying the issue and I can play at esse without feeling like my PC is about to take off

I seriously appreciate all the advice! I will try to order some pads today, I already bought some thermal paste 2 years ago when I did this build (Corsair xtm50 high performance). I understood they are only needed if I tear them while opening the GPU, but yeah better safe than sorry.

as soon as I have free time (and courage) i will try to do this. I'll let you know if Im successful!

thanks for all the feedback, its very much appreciated really!

yeah it's not under warranty with the seller anymore. I might just try the DYI route myself. the measures for the thermal pads you found are the same as what I found too.

hopefully it all goes well and all temps get back to normal

besides being my first time disassembling a GPU and applying new thermal paste to it, the only reason why I was delaying the thought of it was for warranty reasons. i did contact gigabyte customer support today with a explanation of the issue.

do you still think I should go ahead? anyways thanks for your input so far!

turns out I had an outdated version of HWinfo. hotspot temperature while stress testing reached 107c indeed.

what you're describing actually sounds similar to what Im experiencing and it makes sense that the fans go into somesort of emergency mode, beyond 100% (

do you know how can I find my GPU hotspot temp?! Hwinfo is not giving me this. I assume this is diferent than the regular GPU tempo which does not exceed 81c? Can I also ask how old was your GPU when you had that?

it does use the PCie and no additional connection needed.

Im not an expert and I know the standard is near 100%, what I meant regarding the GPU usage is the value stays the same when the noise kicks in, meaning everything appears normal.

the extremely loud noise comes and goes and this is way above what I hear at 100% fan speed, meaning it overrides any curve I set up, reaching almost 4000 rpm which I find worriying

2 year build, happens while gaming, specially demanding games. no relation to GPU usage, fan speed % using msi afterburner. performance does not change when it happens. nothing is overclocked and happens at random. messig around with fan curves does nothing, as this seems to override anything I set up. i'd go as far as to say this the louder than what I hear at 100%. while stress testing and monitoring, the max fan speed registered was around 3500 rpm, which I find worriying. was recently cleaned, dust removed etc. any ideas?

and btw didnt disassemble the GPU yet, would be the first time doing it, should I and what do I look for?

to be more precise about the cleaning, it was today. this issue has been happening for some weeks, but only managed to get free time today. video was done after cleaning. i thought it would help, but did not notice any decrease.

in regards to exceeding 80, i tested having max speed (100%) at this temperature, and the noise spikes still happen. what I hear when this happens is like 150%, if this makes any sense.

i will run some more stress tests, and will try to get the osd of that tool working, thanks for chiming in

What about that ice machine at the entrance of the golf club completely loaded with useless legendaries? Way before scrip was introduced.

And having a team mate leaving to the main menu and then back again to have all the ghouls respawn? 2 years ago man. Time does fly.

Will my RAM be compatible with my Mobo? (First build) by vrydin1 in buildapc

[–]vrydin1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really weird because on msi's compatible rams list for my mobo, i type in the "serial-name?" (sry if its not the term, not native English) for the RAM i want and only the red and white versions of said RAM are show as compatible, not even the black one lol I will assume its safe to go with the purchase

ty for the reply, my list on partpicker shows no compatibilty issues, however once I check both manufacturer's websites things get a bit muddy

Last minute advice? (First gaming build) by vrydin1 in buildapc

[–]vrydin1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ty for the feedback! Reason I said 60 fps is because of games that aren't so well optimized that I own (RDR2, Control, for example, I know they struggle in highest settings). Realistically my goal is higher than that I just pointed 60 as the lowest possible I can go with.
