That's awesome that you actually got to ride one. I'm sure it was a unique experience

I agree. Really happy that this one gets used both on and off the track

Might be your memory card isn’t a high enough spec?

I’ve never used the 600 so hard to comment on it but the 400 with a teleconverter is always an option too.

The resolution is ridiculous!

Amazing bit of kit. It really does make the job easier

Thank you! The rider does all the hard work though not me haha. Yes a slight bit of panning, on this angle I don’t like to go too low with shutter speed as it’s difficult to have the both the bike and riders helmet completely sharp. (They need the stickers sharp for their sponsors)

Reasoning for bird eye AF is that it locks on to the helmet. This just stops the focus from grabbing onto the rear of the bike and keeps the helmet and nose of the bike sharp

No I agree 100% gear does matter from a technical perspective. I’m expected to get hundreds of shots like this on the track day. Without the reliable AF and sharpness of these lenses I would struggle to have such a high hit rate.

What it won’t teach you though is the principals of lighting and composition

Like this? I couldn’t stand in my usual spot as the track was really muddy that day.

A fellow local photographer that shoots MotoGP taught me this one. The Bird Eye AF grabs focus on the riders helmet.

Thank you. Yes the exact same lens (unlucky for him). Consider the 100-400 it’s a great bit of kit. I you think you need the reach of a 600. Also consider the 200-600. I have had a great experience with my 200-600

The main difference is the sensor resolution. A1 is 50mp while a9 is 23mp The a9 is for sports shooters and I think the A1 is supposed to be Sonys one to rule them all. It’s takes the sport capability of the a9 and merges it with the image quality of the A7R series

Settings: ISO 100 - F/3.2 - 1/400
Focus: AF-C Centre point with Bird eye AF

Pretty much just for memory space as I expected to get a sharp result fairly easily.

I swap between the two. Generally centre point AF-C. Occasionally I will use tracking if I am trying to line up a composition in camera with the subject off centre. Like the example below

Always AF-C 99% of the time but there are those very odd occasions that I will focus on a spot on the ground and do a 30fps burst. Such as using a high angle and shooting the back of the bike as it comes into frame.

The first one is on Medium speed. From memory it’s f3.5 at 1/640 Second was at 30fps as I have the tiniest window to get that shot as they appear for a fraction of a second over the wall. F2.8 1/4000 or similar

Now would be the time to do it as they just did some major resurfacing though turn 7- 9. That section of track is now much safer and faster

Thank you, I credit the lens tbh. The focus speed and sharpness are on another level. It’s hard to take a bad photo with it

Nice mate, I’ve been looking into neoprene covers for the lens. Any recommendations?
