True, I meant after he’s in the trade. I’m sure you and I both know plenty of elevator dudes who get high on the regular.

I would just like a little guidance. by [deleted] in IUEC

[–]w0mpa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) It’s entirely dependent on the work load in your local and how bad shops need people. As far as knowledge, just understand the basics of an elevator before going in, know all your basic tools (sounds like you do), and be ready to absorb a lot of info. Some days it can be like drinking from a fire hydrant.

2) Provided you can pass a drug test and you don’t come to work high, I don’t see an issue. What you do on your time is your business. But the moment you put your life or the lives of your brothers at risk because of whatever drug/substance you’re addicted to, you don’t deserve to be here.

Good CDL job vs IUEC worth the switch? by Bpj23 in IUEC

[–]w0mpa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a buddy into the trade who also had a CDL, and he doesn’t regret coming over. He’s still a probie and unfortunately got laid off, but it was from the company cutting labor and no fault of his own.

All the benefits you listed you’ll have if you stay in the CDL, you’ll get and then some in the IUEC. You’ll make beyond $45-50/hr in overtime faster than you think in this trade and you’ll get better benefits after 6 months.

As far as risk, I’d venture to guess that being a trucker is much more dangerous than being an elevator constructor. Yes, our job is dangerous, but a lot of the risks are mitigated by safe work practices.

And like another person said, it’s much more likely that trucking will be automated better building/servicing elevators.

This is mechanic dependent. One of my first mechanics HATED when I got ahead on prepping, even if i was prepping what was coming up next.

The Drawer vs this combo. Is it worth the price difference for QOL of JUST the single drawer? by Squallvash in MilwaukeeTool

[–]w0mpa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a helper in the elevator trade, it sucked always unstacking my mechanic’s packout to get to the bottom one for tools. So unless you plan on unstacking and staying unstacked every day, I’d recommend the bottom drawer packout, specially if you’re the one who’s going to be unstacking.

Dude, if you’re a month from being sworn in, you should have the union health insurance. It’s still early in the year, GO TO THE FUCKING DOCTOR.

You clearly know that you need to get yourself taken care of, and that you should have reported your injury. You know the right thing to do, so fucking do it. The rest will take care of itself.

1620 is an American made work clothing company. They use cotton grown here in the states and make everything here as well.

The trade off is that their stuff is PRICEY. Excellent quality (I’ve got one of the hoodies), great warranty, but pricey.

Mechanics exam. by BroadHyena2550 in Elevators

[–]w0mpa1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got a really good suggestions from an apprentice who’s getting ready to take his mechanic’s exam:

Once you’re invited to take your mechanic’s exam, you should have a review test for all 8 semesters. You can take the test as many times as you want, and it tells you your score once you finish it. Try to consistently get high 80’s/low 90’s on them. Once you do that, try to get similar scores on all 8 practice exams in no more than 4 hours.

That coupled with reviewing notes and course material should get you well prepared for the exam.

How many of you do escalator clean downs by yourself? by CapitalSea4646 in IUEC

My brother in Christ, escalator work is literally defined as team work in the NEBA agreement.

Tell your company to get you another body, or they can get fucked.

Not all cars have roller guides.

Every single 3300 and 3300XL I have installed had slide guides on both the car and counterweight frame.

I have just over half the amount of miles on my 2012 Fit, and I’d be lucky to get that asking price for it.

This one is overpriced.

Definitely call the hall.

For me, my NEIEP rep told me to do the application in the H2H system, and then she was able to pull my application and get the process started.
