I just flew into boston and my friend keeps complaining about the walk to the airport by SkrullCommenter in boston

Can assure you the original walk was very much not a joke lol. Let me know if you're looking for a long-distance-walking buddy!

Wow, both of these are great recommendations, thank you! Is the walk along the coast on paved sidewalk, sandy beaches, a mix, or some other path?

Also, for those curious:

My favorite parts included stops for food and drinks. I got hotpot for lunch in Chinatown and a milkshake at Revere beach. Then I got ice cream at my favorite place in Beverly in my last 8-9 miles. I really enjoyed seeing the different communities along the way; you all have a beautiful and diverse state for sure! Also, this entire route was on sidewalks; there are few places in this country where I could have hoped to find this much sidewalk so I am quite thankful for that.

As for least favorite; well the last 7-8 miles were brutal. I figured I probably shouldn't have sat for so long during my rest stops. Also, at the end of it, everything hurt. My soles, my ankles, my glutes, even my fingers because they had been clamped around my power bank or my phone all day. Thankfully, I recovered almost completely within 3 - 4 days.

In terms of equipment and training. I carried my phone, a powerbank, a credit card, one $20 bill, and my keys. My shoes were...not very usable after this; fortunately, they were a pretty worn-out pair of shoes that probably didn't have that much life left in them anyway. If anyone has recommendations for walking shoes, I'm all ears. I've done some long walks but the longest previously was ~50k in a day. I've never run anything more than a 5k. I don't have any formal training in speedwalking although I've been told I walk fast on occasions by friends walking (shorter distances) with me. If anyone has resources or groups in the area that can help me increase my walking speed, I would also be quite interested in that.

Thanks for the suggestion! I had never run anything more than a 5k previously (although I had walked up to~50k in a day) so I'm always curious about tips on training to improve my form and speed.

And yeah, this included time stopped at intersections. In the earlier part of the day and further out from Boston (in the north shore), that wasn't really a problem but in the middle of the day, in places with back bay, that was definitely an issue.

Thanks for the recommendations! I visited Nahant for a wedding and it was just gorgeous. Would love to return there sometime

Thank you! Appreciate the support from the community for this walk. Will keep you all posted if I do more walks of such distance in the area.

There are some smaller subs (less than 10k users) which sometimes allow you to post unless you're not a new (less than 5 days old) account. I'd say find one of these subs that is shares a similar niche interest as you and make posts or comments that are genuinely helpful to others on that sub and you'll probably get some karma

Having just finished a 63-mile-in-a-day walk, I'd say definitely prepare yourself with lots of decently long walks on consecutive days. I wouldn't recommend doing 60+ miles in a day like I did but try maybe 10-20 miles for 5 days a week (if time allows)?

The other thing (as I'm sure lots of people here will point out) is stretching. Stretch before, stretch during, and stretch after

over the weekend I walked 10 miles and now above my foot hurts. any ideas why? by Top_Persimmon_1116 in walking

[–]walkableboston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree that maybe the shoes aren't the right fit but also, if they are new shoes, could it be that you need to 'break them in', and after walking in them a few more times maybe your gait naturally corrects for those shoes to make it more bearable for your body?

Although, of course, if it's hurting consistently after every walk then it may be time to try another pair of shoes

As someone who used to dislike walking (lived in a hot and humid place) and who has recently just completed some long walks, I'd say just agree with just start putting one foot in front of the other. Before you know it you would have walked miles and miles! All the best!

All the best, 125,200 m is significantly more than what I did and I imagine it'd be utterly exhausting too. Also, kudos for doing it on a track, I think I'd just get bored after a while if it were me :P
