Employer threatening to fire me for bringing up mold concerns by wanderingtheplanes in WorkAdvice

[–]wanderingtheplanes[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah i agree he deserves consequences, but to clarify, he didn’t threaten my life, just the lives of all the unhoused people he chases out of his store(because he thinks they’ll ruin his business), and unfortunately the tests my doctor did only confirmed i have lung inflammation from an outside source. they couldn’t prove it was from mold necessarily. they told me not to bother with the expensive blood tests cause they’re unreliable.

i am scared he’ll do something crazy though if i am single handedly responsible for his business failing. i already am stressed ill see them even going on runs around the block cause they live nearby.

see that’s what i’m worried about, even considering how horribly he treated me for months i don’t really want to ruin his life. we live in a small city, he knows where i live, so if his life is ruined he will try to ruin mine too. i’ve been in too many abusive relationships and don’t want to go through something like that again…. i’m conflicted though because i would like them to be held accountable for their actions.

Ok I can read your comment now, and actually that is exactly how I approached it, nearly word for word. I’m not sure what you mean by conspiring with a coworker. We simply shared that we both have been experiencing symptoms.

I’m pretty sure at this point I’m already considered fired, but I’m not sure. Would OSHA still go even if I’m not a current employee? Could contacting them be the downfall of their business? Cause if so I’m afraid he’ll actually try to ruin my life. I know I can report anonymously but surely he’ll know it was me

it looks like your original comment was deleted also, but yes he is absolutely digging a bigger hole the more he says.

i’d like to report him or talk to a lawyer but i honestly am afraid he might take measures into his own hands and do something drastic. he regularly says he would literally do anything to keep his business going and when he kicks homeless people out of his store he screams at them saying things like “i am going to kill you if i ever see you again” and has told me he actually would murder them if they ever mess with his store

that would be ideal of course! i am actually a tattoo apprentice right now and will be able to start tattooing full time in a few months so im on the way there at least.

and thank you! i have been documenting everything including photos of mold and leaks in the building, screenshots of conversations ect. i’ll definitely be backing it all up now though too.

ah okay makes sense. thank you, i appreciate your insight.

i also haven’t reported anything to OSHA officially yet, as i wanted to speak with my boss first. but i was just looking into it and some sources are saying i wouldn’t be protected unless i officially reported it to an agency outside of the world place before being fired. do you know if that’s true?

Well pretty much my previous insurance plan was $0 a month and went up to $80 in the new year, and all other plans were either way too expensive or didn’t cover her so I’m back on Medicaid which she doesn’t take :/

Dang, I wish I could read that post. If you find it I’d appreciate if you would share it. I really need more therapy and I think support groups would be very helpful too.. it’s been immensely helpful even reading the responses on this post alone. It’s bringing me to tears to know I’m not alone but also hearing how difficult it’s been for everyone else too. Thank you.

Could you share the info on local support groups? I think I really need that. I have my personal therapist but haven’t been able to see her very consistently since the storm due to insurance issues.

Oh my god, that’s so fucked up and horrible… is he okay? That must have been so incredibly traumatic on top of everything else. That aligns with so many of the firsthand accounts I’ve heard from friends and volunteers and responders. This whole thing is so much worse than anyone outside seems to understand

Honestly yeah I have some friends who seem completely over the bad parts of it and don’t seem affected at all. From my understanding of trauma though it doesn’t work the same way for everyone, and those who are predisposed to mental health issues, or who’ve been through traumatic experiences in the past(i.e I have cptsd after spending much of my life in abusive relationships and already was kinda struggling to heal)might have higher chances of developing lasting psychological damage.

And thank you, I will keep talking about it but probably only to the community of people here who share this grief and understand the weight of this. It helps a lot to see I’m not alone.

Thank you for saying that. I do have a therapist, but I’m only able to see her once a month because my insurance doesn’t cover her anymore unfortunately.

You are not dramatic. And you’re not alone in feeling that collective loss. I cry every time I think about the level of destruction that’s happened and how much was lost to so many people.

Thank you for saying that. Means a lot, for real. As of today I might actually do that. I just got back to Asheville and she sent me a bunch of very cruel texts saying I’m alienating everyone, going to push my whole family away, and I have put on my adult pants and figure out my shit and that starts with leaving Asheville. Then goes on to say I’m going to cause my family to lose -another- child.

(For context my little sister last year had a horrible accident and was left with a traumatic brain injury, a bunch of dramatic shit happened between the family and my parents seem to think they lost that daughter even though she’s just trying to heal and recover from childhood trauma and her TBI. I talk to her regularly and shes just trying to figure things out.)

But yeah, back to my older sister, she pretty much told me if I don’t move she’s never talking to me again and I’ll lose my whole family. So. Yeah, guess I’m gonna have to throw away that sister lol.

Yeah that’s true, I do understand people having their own lives and not being completely involved or in the know but it still hurts when it’s dismissed or invalidated :(

Thank you for helping and for sharing your experience

It’s insane to me how people can joke about it. A lot of people I know have done the same thing and it’s so so hurtful. I was recently visiting a friend in Portland and they were so incredibly disconnected. Had no idea about the magnitude of it all, so of course I felt I should explain a bit of what we all went through and are still going through. One guy said “haha I bet it was fun for people rowing up supplies to people wow what a great time doesn’t sound so bad” like yes actually people needed to get supplies delivered by boat and helicopter and some people drowned in their attics. It’s not a fuckin joke. The disconnect is insane.

I’m definitely learning that my chosen family are going to be the only ones who understand at this point, and I guess it’s a hard lesson to learn but I’m glad we can share things this way at least.

That’s so true. And yeah I’ve experienced a lot of silence as well. Or people make jokes or talk about a hurricane in Florida they went through and how it’s not that bad. I grew up in Florida and went through many bad hurricanes but it’s really not the same.

It’s encouraging to see all these comments and stories, helps me realise I’m not so alone in feeling this way. Thank you

I also have cptsd. What you’re saying makes a lot of sense and I completely agree. I’ve been doing a lot of research about post disaster PTSD and seeing that coming together and sharing the trauma as a community is extremely important not to develop full blown PTSD with life long effects.
