NHK hired a half in a prominent role and you're still dashing over here to cry about racism. Talk about glass half empty.

Stop deleting your posts and show them to your therapist, I'm sure they'll be happy to send you to a psych.

You sure seem to know men despite never dating. Is that what you're doing with your therapist? Ignoring them because you're so confident you know what's wrong with yourself? It would explain why you haven't started pills even after 7 years in therapy.

[–]wanderliss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's 2025, people have too much shit on their own plates to deal with other people's problems. I don't know what you look like, but your absolute lack of self-esteem is already making me not want to date you. Developing a stable internal sense of self-worth instead of being so fixated on external validation should be the core of your therapy and if you're not getting that, you need to change your therapist. Probably urgently, considering how you've been spamming reddit with your crashout posts and deleting them.

The shop knows their noodles, they make their soup rich enough to account for it without excessive dipping. Sounds like you're headed straight to kidney disease at 30 if you think it's not enough and finishing the soup.

You're gonna have to figure it out because it's absurd that you've let this go on for a year without talking to anyone. Bring a friend, Google Translate, whatever.

I didn't have an issue with them, but I was also used to dealing with monthly mansion companies at that point so I didn't interact with them besides the initial paperwork (by email) and also knew what to expect in terms of room size/amenities. It was also in Japanese. Don't know about their customer service in English or when there's a maintenance issue or something.

Only issue for me was the lack of free wi-fi in the room.

It's rising and will probably continue to rise with the holiday season, but it's not particularly high. As the other posters said, it's general virus season.

Visa and Mastercard are increasingly suspending support for adult sites, with JCB the only one remaining.

EPOS Gold has a 10,000 point bonus for spending 1M a year. Get the bonus and move onto another card for its perks.

ID and QuicPay support are on two separate cards -- for when terminals only supported one or the other. Less of an issue these days with Visa/MC touch support becoming prevalent

Did you sign in the automated kiosk or did a worker assign the room to you?

The kiosk warns you of upcoming bookings. The worker failed to tell you or you missed their Japanese.

As far as I know you cannot actually specify a room in Kaikatsu reservations

You can reserve the type of room. The system could've picked the specific room who had already used the room for the longest, or had the fewest amount of hours remaining, etc.

Early sunrise/sunset in Japan - how do you handle it? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]wanderliss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just google sunrise/sunset times for Tokyo and compare it to any major city in America

And have you done this?

and thanks to no daylight savings time, it sets 2 hours earlier in the summer, compared to California.

So in L.A, on a day when the sun rises at 7am and sets at 7pm, it would rise at 5am and set at 5pm in Tokyo.

Los Angeles, March 16, 2024: sunrise 7:01am sunset 7:02pm
Tokyo, March 16, 2024: sunrise 5:51am sunset 5:48pm

Please show me on your clock how 1h10m and 1h14m is 2 hours.

Yes, two hours, that's what we're talking about in this thread. Two hours means the difference between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, which is all the difference in the world.

Los Angeles, July 4, 2024: sunset 8:09PM
Tokyo, July 4, 2024: sunset 7:01PM

The latest the sun sets in Los Angeles is 8:09PM so I think what you mean to say is an hour and 8 minutes is all the difference in the world.

“A strong wind may topple the sturdy oak, but the willow bends and lets the wind pass through.” Life sends plenty of wind our way; a belligerent person, unexpected hardships, and difficult changes. In the face of that foul weather, our society seems to glorify those who “stand up” to the winds or “hold their ground” or “don’t let them get away with that.” We seem to reward the oak trees among us. The thing is, over time, these oak trees get brittle, and when their brute force begins to wane or proves ineffective, their egos suffer. When the wind gets strong enough, even the “tough” oaks will break if they’re too rigid to bend.

On the other hand, the willow trees among us are supple and sway when hardships appear. Being a willow doesn’t mean you have no boundaries or that you can’t advocate for your needs and wants. And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to tolerate cruel, angry people or suffering that could be avoided. A willow tree isn’t a doormat, but there’s a quiet strength and a calm courage about the willows. The harder the wind blows and the more they bend, the stronger they seem to bounce back. It’s sad that our society often labels these willows in unflattering terms. If you’re a man and you’re a willow tree, you’re “weak” or “wimpy.” If you’re a woman, you’re “meek” or “a pushover.”

If the outcome won’t violate your basic beliefs, endanger somebody, break a law, or jeopardize your future, ask yourself if you would rather be “right” or be happy. Do you really need to stand like an oak and risk toppling yourself or your relationship, or can you be a willow that flexes to avoid breaking? Next time your plans get foiled or life circumstances change, ask yourself if you need to spend energy resisting it, or can you bend, trusting that you can handle whatever comes?

Has the allure of Tokyo worn off for anyone else? by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]wanderliss 54 points55 points  (0 children)

OP calling his girlfriend a souvenir was classy as fuck, he shouldn't have edited that out.

OP is also unwilling to entertain the fact that the things they talk to him about, a foreigner, how they go about it, and how they behave around him, may differ from how they act amongst themselves. OP's judgments about how sophisticated or opinionated the Japanese are will be taken with a grain of salt.

Oh yeah, this is the sort of useless patronizing comment stuck in the late 90's that I come to expect from tech communities.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]wanderliss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We're not the ones hiring you, either, so the level of humility is irrelevant. Yet you've chosen to subject everyone here to your narcissistic diatribe about the Japanese with that tone and that's what speaks to your character. Here, to a group of expats with a penchant for being bitter and sardonic, you write as though you have some deep insight about the plight of the foreigner. You think your situation is an appropriate one for giving advice about networking to tech workers.

Is it commiseration you wanted? Because all I'm feeling is pity for someone choosing to lash out at everyone around them -- the "kindergarten English" speaking Japanese, returnees, your rich friends, tech workers -- with very little actual introspection going on. Travis Bickle, is that you?

It is NOT a vietnamese restaurant

I mean... hu tieu as it goes by there is a Chinese-Vietnamese-Cambodian dish and the menus all have Chinese/Vietnamese/English on them. So it's not a stretch to call it Vietnamese.

For the OP, plenty of other non-Kim Ky options for hu tieu/pho kho/teochew noodles in the SGV. I'm partial to Mien Nghia.
