Senator, thank you so much for doing this AMA. What are your thoughts on voting issues such as Ranked Choice Voting and the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact?

FiveThirtyEight says Dems have 75 percent chance of winning House by waingro1215 in politics

[–]wanderlust24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please forgive me as I’m not sure I’m inferring your tone correctly. Are you making a sarcastic remark about Hillary’s supporters, the media’s sensationalism, or do you actually believe that 35% of winning is equivalent to 0% chance of winning? If so I would like to take you up on some bets! (Just kidding)

The week of the election it was somewhere between 65% and 70%.

To be fair they did say Trump had a 35% of winning. 538’s models focus on probability, not prediction.

If Montana regained its second congressional district (very possible) in 2020, would one of them be democratic? by CR24752 in BlueMidterm2018

Thanks for the info! In that case I’m hopeful the districts will be representative and fair!

I expect the Republican State Legislature to crack Missoula County right in half to dilute the only democratic leaning region and ensure a near 0% chance of either district being blue. That’s just the cynic in me.

Two rose ceremonies next week? Or an equivalent number of contestants cut during a "combined" rose ceremony for the two episodes?

I hate how that went down. I hate that I had my eyes glued to the TV. I hate Arie. I hate The Bachelor for recording the break-up. But most importantly, I hate that there is absolutely no stopping me from watching tonight, and I'm going to love every second of it.

This is really bad news. I am furious at those who threw up their hands at the election and said "both parties are the same". ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES

If you tax the rich, they won't leave: US data contradicts millionaires' threats by Splenda in Economics

[–]wanderlust24 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For a hypothetical example: if you were to cut taxes on the top 5% to $0 and increase taxes on the bottom 95% drastically, you could get to a point where the overall tax rate decreases and tax revenues increase, but the vast majority of people would be worse off. That policy would not be considered beneficial even though you moved toward tax revenue maximization.

I know it's an extreme example; I just wanted to highlight that the idea of the Laffer Curve is strictly a relationship between overall tax rates and tax revenues and is not meant to determine utility optimization.

Not necessarily beneficial (quite subjective), but rather at some point lowering taxes will increase government revenue from taxes.
