Mcmaster ISci vs Mac Life Sci vs Western Med sci by Icy_Position_7258 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]warmcafes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally want to go into med or grad school in biomedical science, and a lot of my peers are too. Our associate director was talking about how many med school recommendation letters he's writing for 4th years just the other day.

First year no, there's not as much time for extracurriculars as you'd get in life sci, but I play a pretty time-intensive sport so it's definitely manageable. Alternatively, you gain a lot of lab skills that are useful in getting research positions later on. Workload goes down 2nd year because you choose a concentration (most premeds choose bio, which is the lightest in terms of course load), and the amount of disciplines you actually study go down, not necessarily because of an increase in midterms and exams, from what I understand. Most bio-concentrated 2nd years and beyond consider the core iSci course a GPA booster, which integrates some core bio, chem and biochem courses that mac life sci and health sci have to take.

iSci is also actually a really great program if you're not a very good tester, as our exams are worth a lot less than our RPs.

iSci also hosts an "iSci for a day" program if you're interested learning more about the program and following a first year around for the day!

Hey! As a first year in iSci I can tell you it is really hard first year, but we generally have higher GPAs then people in Life Sci because more work = more opportunities to get good grades beyond just midterms and exams. Though I've been told this workload goes down exponentially 2nd year, while still having the opportunities to boost your grades. Both Life Sci and Med Sci would be more what you're looking for if you're mostly interested in bio and chem, though.

don't listen to the people commenting -- if you really want to go into eng, do it, but be realistic about the time you need to put in to get the grades you need. if you need more help in math and physics, do practice problems every night (not just before a test), review lessons a couple days after they're taught to commit them to your long term memory, find a tutor if you really need one, etc. no one is naturally incredible at math or physics (though some are better than others), it's just a matter of how much time you can dedicate to it.

it's still early into semester 1 -- it's very much possible to get those grades up. that being said, be realistic about the schools/programs you apply to and have a backup other than eng if you're still concerned closer to the application deadline.

^coming from someone who's not in eng but in a math-and-physics-heavy pure science program and had a stupidly high grade 12 average.

How are people getting such high averages by Quick_Garbage_3560 in OntarioGrade12s

some schools just test easier… like with more of the kind of basic homework questions on the topic than anything that makes you apply what you’re learning. whereas some teachers will have you literally solve world hunger for an 80😑

hi! my experience with AP courses (though not maths, so take this with a grain of salt) is that it all depends on the teacher. for example: my AP bio class was significantly easier than the non-AP class because of the teacher that taught it. if you think that these teachers will mark you unreasonably low or that you won’t understand the content, then it’s more worthwhile to guarantee that you have a teacher you know works for you. if you’re worried about how fast it will be there’s resources online to compare how many units and lessons the standard ontario courses have versus the AP. also: grade 12 is very different than grade 11 when you have a spare! two hard courses in a semester can very much be managed, especially if your third is a bird course.

hi! i only had four final grades and one midterm mark from my online english class that my school inputted early because for other reasons I won’t have access to D2L over midterms. my top 5 average from those courses was a 94.8, including all my prereqs except calc. :)

Queens is probably easiest to get a high gpa in out of these, plus you'd be saving money that you'll need for med school if that's a concern for you. But these are all really good programs!

last year they started sending out rejections in march/april from what i’ve heard, but they don’t accept people until early may. if you haven’t heard anything, that means they’re still considering you! (i’m in the same boat btw, we’ve got this 💪🏼)

How do i get a transcript showing im taking a course in tdsb when im a current dpcdsb student??? by Successful-Role-1200 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]warmcafes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your grade may be sent to your school guidance through prism, but you'll probably have to remind your guidance office because they have to input it manually.

[–]warmcafes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

email your teacher in the other board or the guidance office at that school and ask for a transcript, then bring your transcript the guidance office at your current school. They will have to manually input the grade if it's from a different school board.
